  • A 32-year-old US tourist was brutally attacked by a man on Wednesday night 
  • Victim was being followed by the attacker after getting of the tram in Victoria 
  • He was knocked unconscious and suffered a brain bleed and broken jaw 
  • The victim was rushed to hospital where he undertook two surgeries 
  • Police are hunting for the perpetrator who is believed to be in his 30s 

A manhunt is underway for a thug who chased an American tourist through a carpark before knocking him unconscious and taunting him during the brutal assault.

CCTV footage shows the 32-year-old victim being followed after getting off a tram at the intersection of Bell Street and Plenty Road, in Victoria, about 11.22pm on Wednesday.

He was seen walking through a car park when the man who was following him began yelling at him.

The victim was then chased around the car park by the unidentified man before he was knocked unconscious.

The attacker then continuously struck the victim, who suffered a brain bleed and a broken jaw in the vicious assault. 

As the bloodied victim lay on the floor, the perpetrator appeared to tower over him as he taunted him.

He had lay there for 25 minutes before gaining strength and made his way to a main street where a passerby saw him and called emergency services. 

 Detective Senior Constable Matthew Coleiro described the incident as ‘a terrifying assault… incredibly disturbing.’ 

He was rushed to Austin Hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery.

Another surgery followed for his broken jaw.

The victim had been holidaying in Australia for six weeks, and was scheduled to fly home on Saturday, but has been forced to delay returning home due to the injury. 

‘His family has been notified, but he just wants to go home,’ Det. Snr. Const. Coleiro said.

‘We’re still trying to piece together the puzzle.’

Police are searching for the attacker who is believed to be in his early 30s with a slim build and appears to be balding with short dark hair and a dark beard.

At the time of the assault he was wearing a t-shirt with a white motif along the front and knee length cargo shorts. He was carrying a large backpack.
