Hurricanes to wear Whalers’ uniforms twice this season

The Carolina Hurricanes have decided to go back in time and will wear the uniforms of the Hartford Whalers for two games against the Boston Bruins this season.

The franchise was located in Hartford, Conn., for 18 seasons before moving to North Carolina in 1997. The Hurricanes will wear the green Whalers’ jerseys and mark their New England lineage against the Boston Bruins at home on Dec. 23 and when they visit Boston on March 5.

“We’re proud of the history and traditions that we’ve built in 21 years in North Carolina, but we’ve never thrown away the records established during this franchise’s 18 NHL seasons in Connecticut,” Hurricanes president and general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “This is a chance to celebrate our team’s heritage and the players and coaches who laid the groundwork for this franchise.”

The move represents a turnaround for the franchise and comes under new owner Tom Dundon, who purchased the team in January. Previous owner Peter Karmanos Jr. moved the club from Hartford and turned his back on the heritage.

The Hurricanes, who won the 2006 Stanley Cup, open their season Oct. 4 against the New York Islanders in Raleigh, N.C.
