‘I could never be friends with him’: Teenage tennis sensation unleashes on Nick Kyrgios

Kick Kyrgios has been slammed by a rising Canadian tennis star who said he ‘could never be friends with him’.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, 18, defeated Kyrgios at the Queen’s tournament in London on Thursday, before going on a scathing rant about the Australian tennis bad boy.

Meanwhile Kyrgios, 24, was slapped with a $25,000 fine after a series of heated exchanges with the umpires in his first and second round matches.

Following Kyrgios’ usual display of unsportsmanlike behaviour throughout their match, Auger-Aliassime kept his cool to win in straight sets 6-7 7-6 7-5.

‘I think he’s a good tennis player, but I could never be friends or close to a person like that,’ he said in an interview with Tennis Life Media.

‘Beyond that, if I wasn’t a tennis player – for example, if we knew each other at school or whatever – he’s not someone I would be friends with or hang out with. So you have to look at two things. There’s the tennis player, and there’s the person. I don’t really feel like associating with a person like that.’

Although Auger-Aliassime made it clear he wasn’t a fan of Kyrgios’ attitude, he did admit that he admires the hot headed Aussie’s tennis prowess.

‘All I have to say, really, about a person like that is that I admire what he does on the court. He’s a very good player. His tennis qualities are incredible.’

Auger-Aliassime has earned himself the nickname King Felix – making the players’ rivalry all the more fiery considering Kyrgios refers to himself as ‘King Kyrgios’ on Instagram.

The controversial player was hit with hefty punishment for unsportsmanlike conduct on Friday, adding to the list of misdemeanours that have plagued him throughout his career.

Kyrgios swore at the umpire, mocked his hat and threatened to walk off the court after a series of line calls that went against him.

He was then slugged with a $14,445 fine for a similar offence in the match with Auger-Aliassime for smashing the ball out of the court.

It is the second big fine Kyrgios has been slapped with in two months after his chair throwing antics at the Italian Open in May cost him a fine of over $A30,000.

On Thursday Kyrgios bemoaned the poor officiating he claims is hurting the game when matches are played on outside courts at ATP tournaments and called for umpires to be punished for making mistakes.

‘I just don’t think, at this level of sport, that we should have line judges and umpires that aren’t making the right decisions,’ Kyrgios said.

‘And I know what happens. Nothing happens. They get a little slap on the wrist.

‘They don’t get any warning or fine or anything for their mistakes. So what’s the difference?’

Last year at Queen’s Kyrgios was fined following his semi-final defeat to Marin Cilic after making suggestive gestures with a water bottle.
