‘I just want it to be horrible’: Vernon Kay wants I’m A Celeb contestants to be given less food

He competed on last year’s covid restricted series of I’m A Celebrity at Gwrych Castle in North Wales. 

And Vernon Kay has said that he thinks this year’s I’m A Celebrity contestants should be given less food. 

Speaking to the BBC Newscast podcast, the TV presenter, 47, said: ‘Someone asked me, what do you think we can fix? …I said, less food, make it colder. I just wanted it to be more horrible for them!’

I’m A Celebrity is known for its disgusting and terrifying challenges, which were somewhat hampered last year by Covid protocols.  

Speaking to his I’m A Celebrity campmate Victoria Derbyshire, Vernon said: ‘I think they will probably upscale some of the challenges [this year], the trials, we missed, and AJ particularly missed the physical trials.

‘I have heard that they had those lined up for us. But Covid prevented us from leaving the castle, it prevented us from going to another outdoor space that wasn’t under the strict Covid protocols we were.

‘But I think those will come back. I think it will be more challenging, it will be more gruelling.’

Victoria Derbyshire, who came fourth in last year’s series, revealed contestants were instructed not to interact with crew members.

She said: ‘They did tell us, when you go out on a trial or a challenge, don’t chat to the production crew, don’t make friends with them.’

Vernon added: ‘We’re told not to communicate so that we don’t have any sense of reality. You know, we’re on a reality TV show, but it is so we don’t get emotional about news stories or about things that could affect us or our emotions in camp.’

‘I had some money on the Masters at the time, and I was nudging and prodding the security guards to tell me who won.

‘For a couple of days I couldn’t get any answers, and then I just walked into camp one day and one said “Dustin Johnson” and I was like “YES” because he was one of my two way bets.’ 

The inside info comes after Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly  transformed into knights for the latest I’m A Celebrity teaser this week. 

In the new video, the duo poke fun at the latter’s height when they arrived on horses, yet it seemed seemed Ant, 46, had pulled the short straw as, while his best pal Dec, 45, rode an imposing white horse, he trotted around on the back of a considerably shorter pony – much to Dec’s apparent delight.

Donning shiny silver helmets and coordinating gloves, the presenters have certainly swapped Australia’s New South Wales for Britain’s North Wales as they ventured on a quest to Gwrych Castle.

As the trailer plays out, the duo are seen plotting tasks for the stars, including eating pig testicles, before a voiceover promises: ‘The most gruesome series ever’.

With unmissable red capes in-tow, the presenters looked every inch the part in the medieval-inspired photos. It comes after a clip for the ITV show saw the acclaimed duo transform into knights, dressed head-to-toe in armour. 

A promo image showed the pair standing in front a map of their battlefield, with Ant cutting an imposing figure in his armour, while Dec mustered his efforts to remain as serious as possible.

The duo were then seen sitting campside with quills coming up with ideas for tasks, with Ant asking: ‘What’s worse than eating a pigs testicles?’, to which Dec declared: ‘Eating two pigs testicles!’

They were then seen plotting out war strategies on a map, on which they pushed all the stars to go to war. 

A little glimpse was given into the idyllic Welsh scenery as two ponies grazed in their background. 

These were the same ponies which, last month, the best pals were seen riding in another fleeting trailer ahead of the new series.

Preparations for the upcoming series are underway at the camp in Gwrych Castle, North Wales, which will play host for the second consecutive year due to travel restrictions surrounding its usual home on Australia’s east coast.

ITV bosses are facing a scramble against time to renovate the dilapidated building – which is now closed to the public – and its surrounding areas ahead of the new series expected to begin in November.

The reality show, which usually films in the Australian wilderness, was forced to relocate to the dilapidated castle following fears Australia could shut its borders because of the ongoing pandemic.

Producers have since filed an extensive planning application to the authorities in order to make the country house inhabitable in time for the new series.

Setting: This year’s show has once again relocated from sunny Australia to Wales amid Covid restrictions, with the famous faces once again heading to Conwy County
