‘I only wanted to do comedy’: Jamie Dornan confesses he hadn’t planned to play ‘psychopaths’ while pursuing acting career with Hollywood move

Jamie Dornan has confessed he had hoped to appear in comedies following his move to Hollywood, before ending up playing ‘psychopaths’ instead.

The actor, 39, is best known for transforming into BDSM fanatic Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades movies as well as serial killer Paul Spector in BBC’s The Fall.

He told PA: ‘When I first started acting, when I first moved to LA, I only wanted to do comedy. That’s what I thought I’d do.’

Admitting he found himself on ‘a very different path and played a psychopath’, he added that he ultimately ‘loves a challenge in life’.

Jamie continued: ‘For me, I don’t understand the point of doing this for a career if you don’t want to explore every facet that the job serves up, by all the different mediums of it, all the different genres, all the different challenges of it.

‘And I love a challenge in life. Always have, always will.

‘I love the exploration that this job allows, and I feel like I’ve spent the last eight years or so making the most of that and taking stuff on that isn’t the same as the previous [thing] and I plan to do that for as long as I’m allowed a career.’

The BAFTA nominee also told The Mirror recently: ‘I would like to do more comedy. At one point, I thought I would and then The Fall came and people were not looking to me for that.

‘What am I drawn to? It could be a dramatic six-part thing to a funny play. I don’t plan that much as it is hard to plan in this industry.

‘There is no way I won’t do comedy but it may not be next year.’
