I run Britain’s cheapest petrol station and I’m charging far less than the UK average

I run Britain’s cheapest petrol station – this is why I’m charging far less than the UK average: Find out how much fuel costs at this Welsh forecourt

  • Small station in Pembrokeshire is charging 15p less than UK average for petrol
  • Price of diesel is some 24p cheaper than the UK average recorded yesterday

A garage owner is claiming the crown of ‘King of the Pumps’ because he believes he is selling the cheapest fuel available anywhere in Britain.

Vijay Jaganathan is advertising both petrol and diesel at 129.9p per litre at his rural forecourt – compared to the UK average of 145p for petrol and 154p for diesel.

Vijay, who runs the Eastgate Garage filling station in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, says his low prices will remain ‘for the next few weeks’ after recently making a decision that will benefit motorists who visit his forecourt.

Vijay Jaganathan is currently advertising both petrol and diesel at less than £1.29 per litre at his rural forecourt in Wales – that’s far cheaper than the UK average

Vijay says he can offer the affordable prices for both fuel types after recently switching his supplier to Texaco – and buying petrol and diesel in bulk while wholesale prices were low.

And he says the offer of petrol at 15p less per litre than the current UK average – and diesel 24.4p less – is already attracting drivers from far and wide as they hope to fill up cheaply.

Compared to the UK price of both fuels recorded on Sunday 14 May, drivers filling an average family car’s 55-litre tank with unleaded at his petrol station in Pembrokeshire will save around £8.30, while diesel drivers will save just over £13.

Vijay said: ‘We had our first delivery yesterday and the queues have been really long, but luckily we serve our customers very quickly.

‘These prices are an opening offer, but they will definitely continue with our aim of being the cheapest around.

‘We are currently the cheapest in the UK – this has been confirmed to me by Texaco.’

The current average UK prices for fuel, according to the RAC, are 145.95p for unleaded and 154.31p for diesel.

Both petrol and diesel have fallen almost 50p a litre since they peaked at record levels last summer, but are still far higher than they were in 2021.

The weekend’s UK average prices are well below the peak of 191.55p for petrol and 199.22p for diesel recorded last summer, but is also considerably higher than the 126.53p and 130.43p respective prices in early May 2021.

Despite the recent decline, the RAC has cautioned that fuel prices could rise in the near future, due to an uplift in oil prices.

Last week, the organisation’s fuel spokesman, Simon Williams, said: ‘The big question is whether retailers will raise their pump prices, and if so how quickly.’

He added that, while the average cost at the pump should not increase immediately following the spike in oil prices, it could creep upwards if they remained elevated ‘for several days’.
