I was on the Delta Airlines diarrhoea plane and it was horrible – the vanilla disinfectant only made the smell worse as airline staff frantically tried to clean up the mess

A passenger on the Delta flight that was forced to turn around after a passenger suffered a bout of diarrhoea in the aisle said it ‘ran all the way through the plane’.

The aircraft had set off from Atlanta, but touched back down in the city at 10:40pm after the plane was turned around as the grim accident was deemed a biohazard.

The flight did not reembark on the intended journey to Barcelona until about five hours later after 2:30am.

People who were on the plane last Friday share details of the horrific journey on social media.

One woman, who goes by Dee W on X, wrote: ‘My partner was on that flight! It was pretty bad. It was dribbled down the aisle, smelled horrible. The vanilla scented disinfectant used on it only made it smell like vanilla s***.

‘After the plane landed, it was thoroughly cleaned. They didn’t leave until around 2:30am.’

However, she clarified that the plane was squeaky clean when the passengers boarded the plane again in the early hours of morning.

She added ‘The flight was met by emergency vehicles and EMTs carried the sick passenger off the plane.

‘My partner said the plane was cleaner when they got back on at 2am than it was the first time they got on. No smell either.’

Another passenger who was on the Airbus A350 aircraft to Barcelona with his wife, said it was a ‘mess’ and that a whole new carpet had to be put in, which ended up being a five-hour cleaning operation.

The X user, John Hurdt, wrote ‘Both my wife and I were on the flight. It was a mess.

‘The pilots made the right decision to turn around. The ground crew ripped out the carpet and put new in.’

He also praised the staff involved that dealt with the chaos, adding ‘Considering the circumstances, the ground crew did a great job, along the attendants and the pilots.’

Xansby Swanson took to X to share that his little brother was also on the flight and managed to capture a video of the scene.

At first, he tweeted ‘Lil bro headed abroad rn but his plane had to go back to ATL an hour into the flight bc someone sh** up and down the aisle.’

While other passengers would have been frustrated by the inconvenience, his little brother found the situation very amusing.

He wrote: ‘Haven’t laughed harder than his phone call to me at midnight to explain why he was still in America. He said it was the funniest thing he’s ever experienced.’

In the video, the camera pans up and down the aisle to show the brown substance all over the carpet with paper towels placed on top in a clean-up attempt.

Marie Beals-Basinger was also on the flight with her husband, but thankfully the pair were in first class so they missed most of the ordeal.

She told DailyMail.com: ‘My husband and I were on the flight. Thank goodness we were in first class, so we missed the experience.

‘We did see Delta crew attendees running back and forth in protective coverings or with gloves.

‘They told us we would have to get off the flight because they had to do a Thorough cleaning and replace the carpet.

‘We are on our way to the Celebrity Reflection. We were worried that we would miss the cruise.

‘We set at the airport for hours. All of us so exhausted. Finally, we were allowed back on the plane. Delta was very accommodating, they gave continual updates.

‘We knew that we missed the cruise, we got to the airport and celebrity was there and picked up all 52 passengers even though we were about 3 hours late.

Adding ‘It was an experience that I hope no one has to go through. I hope the poor woman that had this experience recovers.’

One user said ‘This the type of thing that would make me never take Delta again bc how will you EVER be certain you didn’t get the poo poo plane if they don’t decommission it???’

Another suggested burning the aircraft, writing ‘Burn it. I can’t risk flying on a poo plane.’

Someone else expressed their worry about flying with Delta later in the week, tweeting ‘I’m flying with Delta to Europe on Friday, what if I get the poo poo plane.’
