‘I would like to get Kohli out’: Archer targets cricket’s stars after making England World Cup squad

‘I would like to get Virat Kohli out… I wasn’t able to in the IPL’: Jofra Archer targets cricket’s biggest stars after making England’s World Cup squad

  • Jofra Archer was named in England’s 15-man World Cup squad on Tuesday
  • The 24-year-old fast bowler only qualified to play for England in March
  • Archer and England will first meet Virat Kohli’s India on June 30 at Edgbaston

Jofra Archer was promoted to England’s World Cup squad on Tuesday and immediately set his sights high by targeting the best players in the world.

The exciting Archer’s inevitable inclusion came at the expense of the unlucky David Willey and he wasted no time in relishing the battles ahead, in particular when England come up against India and their superstar captain Virat Kohli.

‘I’d like to get Kohli out because I wasn’t able to in the IPL,’ said the Barbadian-born fast bowler, who qualifies for England through his English father and a reduced three-year qualification period.

‘I’d like AB de Villiers, too, but I don’t think he’ll be playing for South Africa. Chris Gayle as well, but I just hope to do well against whoever I play against.’

ENGLAND’S FINAL 15

World Cup squad: Morgan (captain), Bairstow, Roy, Root, Buttler (keeper), Stokes, Moeen, Woakes, Rashid, Archer, Plunkett, Vince, Curran, Wood, Dawson

England, as revealed by MailOnline on Monday, made three changes from their provisional squad for a tournament that starts next week, bringing in Archer for Willey, Liam Dawson for Joe Denly and James Vince for the disgraced Alex Hales.

But it is the inclusion of Archer that will excite the cricketing world at the start of a mouth-watering summer in which England will try to win their first 50-over World Cup ahead of the biggest series of them all — the Ashes.

‘If I was picked for the Ashes I’d be over the moon,’ Archer told Sky. ‘But right now there is a World Cup to think about.

‘I’ve only just got into the side and I don’t expect to be immediately picked for the Test team. I’m just really excited to be involved.’

Skipper Eoin Morgan said: ‘Jofra has come in and done exactly what he’s done for Sussex and other franchises around the world. I think he has actually come on in the games he’s played. He’s a very exciting prospect.

‘I spoke to David Willey and Joe Denly last night and said, longer term, with the length of the tournament and the amount of fixtures we will play, we are likely to get injuries along the way and they are next in line.

‘So, I still see them playing a part in our journey and our World Cup campaign.’
