The first day of April has been associated with jokes, pranks and mischief for several centuries – but the origins of the tradition are contested.

Some historians predict that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, and it is thought it spread throughout Britain in the 18th century.

One theory of how April Fools’ Day came about, is that it has to do with when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which was decided by Pope Gregory XIII.

People who were slow to get the news, or didn’t realise the start of the new year had moved to January 1, became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.
