Idris Elba’s wife Sabrina Dhowre defends friend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry over private jet

Idris Elba’s wife Sabrina Dhowre defends friend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry over private jet habit suggesting flying First Class risks fans trying to take ‘selfies’ at airports

  • Harry and Meghan faced criticism for four private jet flights in just 11 days
  • Comes despite the couple’s awareness-raising on pollution and environment
  • Sabrina says that airports can be ‘absolutely ridiculous’ for famous flyers

Sabrina Dhowre waded into the row over Harry and Meghan’s gas-guzzling jet use as by suggesting that taking ordinary or first class flights risks being bombarded by selfie requests.

The model – who is married to actor Idris Elba – defended her friend and former Suits star as ‘absolutely lovely’ as she defended her on Good Morning Britain today.

It comes amid criticism of the Duke and Duchess for taking four private jet flights in just 11 days despite their frequent highlighting of environmental issues.

Presenter Richard Madeley put it to her that the use of Elton John’s private plane risked coming off as ‘hypocrisy’ before Sabrina asked: ‘What’s the alternative?’

Sean Fletcher, a news reader on the show, said famous people risk being ‘mobbed’ by fans at airports, to which Richard suggested they fly first class.

As Sabrina said ‘if only it were that easy’, Richard pointed out that it surely can’t be strenuous to fly in luxury.

Sabrina, who attended the Royal couple’s wedding, said: ‘No, it can be. We’ve had instances where even TSA (Transportation Security Administration) people stop you for photos.’

She added that airports can be ‘absolutely ridiculous’ especially when Meghan and Harry are travelling with baby Archie.

Mrs Elba suggested that the Duke and Duchess could carbon offset to make up for the footprint of flying.

Carbon offsetting refers to the reducing of emissions in certain places to make up for emissions elsewhere.

Prince Harry and Meghan, who have been outspoken on environmental issues in recent months, generated an estimated seven times the emissions per person compared to a commercial flight when flying home from Nice.

Photographs of the royal couple and three-month-old Archie showed the family stepping on board the Cessna 680 Citation Sovereign jet on Saturday at about 3pm local time, having arrived in France three days earlier.

Royal experts said the British public do not want to be ‘lectured on climate change by those who don’t do follow their own advice’, while MPs said the trips do not ‘fit with their public image’ they project as eco-warriors.

The trip to Nice came shortly after Harry and Meghan, who married in May last year, had returned by private jet to the UK from Ibiza after a six-night break on the Spanish island to mark the Duchess’s 38th birthday.
