IKEA releases $59 air-purifying CURTAINS that ‘break down air pollution’ in the home

  • IKEA has released inventive self-purifying curtains to break down air pollution
  • GUNRID is activated by light and uses a process known as photo catalyst
  • The new $59 product self-cleans and is made from 100% recycled materials
  • The product is available to purchase online through the IKEA website

IKEA has released air-purifying curtains.

The new product, called GUNRID, doesn’t require electricity but is activated by both indoor and outdoor light due to its unique mineral based, ‘photo catalyst’ coating.

Over the past ten years IKEA has thoroughly developed and trialled this innovative ability to ensure the photo catalyst coating is both safe and functional within the home, which it has proven to be.

Not only are the inventive curtains affordably priced at $59, but the product is self-cleaning, meaning customers will save water, energy and money reducing the number of washes.

GUNRID is also made from 100 per cent recycled polyester made from PET bottles in order to reduce the number of raw materials used and lower the environmental impact.

Australians can purchase the product online through the IKEA website.

IKEA Product Developer Mauricio Affonso said the goal was to invent a product to clean the air in a simple, convenient and affordable way that wouldn’t take up a lot of space in the home.

‘Many people know that outdoor air pollution can be a problem, but not many are aware that indoor air can be as bad, or even worse than the outdoor air,’ Mauricio said.

Common indoor air pollutants occur from everyday activities and products, such as cooking on a gas stove and exposing nitrogen oxides or solvents found in furniture, paints and plastics.

‘We were curious about creating a product that is multifunctional and that would help break down air pollutants that many air purifiers leave behind,’ Mauricio said.

‘What’s so great about GUNRID is that this technology can be applied to any textile. This creates endless possibilities to improve the air at home,’ he continued.

GUNRID is IKEA’s first product that tackles the growing issue of air pollution, though it certainly won’t be the last.
