I’m A Celebrity 2020 Victoria Derbyshire reflects on mispronouncing Jeremy Hunt’s name

She made an embarrassing blunder when presenting her BBC Two news show back in June 2019, accidentally saying Jeremy Hunt’s surname was C***.

And Victoria Derbyshire, 52, reflected on the ‘awful’ time she mispronounced the politician’s name live on air during Thursday’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

The journalist spoke about the incident during a chat with her campmates about their worst days, adding that the experience was ‘excruciating’.

Victoria said: ‘I mispronounced his name, it was excruciating, it was awful, I buried my head in my hands.’

Although Victoria wasn’t amused after making the mistake, the other celebrities in the Welsh camp seemed to enjoy the tale and laughed as she told the story.

Talking in the Telegraph, Giovanna Fletcher said: ‘It’s quite comforting knowing whoever you are or whatever you do, we all have those days where it’s just not going your way.’

The journalist’s gaffe happened on her weekday news and current affairs programme during a four-way debate over who should be the next Tory leader in June 2019.

Victoria said at the time that she was especially embarrassed because it was usually men who made the mistake.

Addressing Conservative MP Steve Brine, she said: ‘You say the man you are backing, Jeremy C*** … I’m so sorry, Jeremy Hunt.

‘I’ve never said that before in my life. It’s normally men who say that so I really, really want to apologise.’

The BBC’s subtitle service managed to avoid further embarrassment by substituting the word with ‘EXPLETIVE’.

Victoria also later tweeted: ‘Apologies again and I meant it’s been mostly men on air, male broadcasters, who have ended up getting his name wrong.

‘Am not saying men generally go around saying the word! That’s what was in my head – appreciate it didn’t come out like that. Sorry again!’.

During the conversation about worst days on I’m A Celeb, Ruthie Henshall told a story about when she starred with Micky Rooney in ‘Crazy For You’.

She explained how he gave her something for a bad stomach but it made it worse and she nearly had an accident on stage.

While Jordan North told a story about how when he was interviewing Yungblud he was told in advance not to mention Halsey who he’d just broken up with… however he accidentally did.

And Mo Farah told everyone about the time he fell over whilst running in an international championship and when he got back up he accidentally started running the wrong way around the track.

Elsewhere in the show Shane Richie was seen spluttering in disgust as he and Hollie Arnold took on the Wicked Waterways trial.

The EastEnders star, 56, and the Paralympian, 26, were chosen by the public to face the trial, which saw them face all manner of water critters in a stinky underground sewer.

Hollie, wearing a hard hat and goggles, was seen in a teaser clip for the task calling out: ‘Right go go go. I’ve untangled it’ as she passed Shane a section of chain.

While the soap star nearly retched as he crawled through the sewer and was showered with putrid water.

A whimsical Ant and Dec said: ‘They’re making hard work of this, I don’t think they need to do all this you know.’

Hollie called out: ‘I just need a bit to fill up this one and we can get another star.’

A panicked Shane called out: ‘I can’t get the chain!’

Dec said: ‘There’s nothing we can say to help. It is what it is. Get the water, pour the water in the collection point. That’s all it is. ‘I’ve said this earlier, I read it off the card.’

However, despite their efforts the duo only managed to get two stars – which meant four meals for the 12 celebs in the camp.

Shane said: ‘We set a precedent, this is the first one when we’ve kind of dropped the ball.’
