A former hotel manager has warned travelers to never leave their toothbrushes out in the bathroom in a bid to avoid any unhygienic mishaps.
In a TikTok, Melissa Hanks, who is based in San Antonio, Texas, reveals something she has heard on the grapevine involving housekeeping and rude guests.
She explains in the clip, which has been viewed more than 4,000 times: ‘When turning your room while you’re staying in a hotel, I have heard of housekeepers who clean certain areas in bathrooms with a guest’s toothbrush that you don’t want to have near your mouth.’
Instead of keeping a toothbrush in the bathroom, she advises packing it away ‘just to avoid any situation like this.’

The travel pro highlights in the caption that she has ‘personally never seen it [happen]’ and ‘it is definitely NOT okay to do this.’
In the TikTok she also adds that she would fire a member of staff if she found out this had happened.
Viewers expressed their horror over Melissa’s revelation.
One commenter wrote: ‘In all my years of travel, I never once thought about this, Thank you.’
Another added: ‘Oh my gosh, yuck! Thanks for sharing this.’
Like Melissa, a housekeeper said she had never witnessed this happen and she never touches ‘personal stuff’ when she cleans.
Several viewers said they never let anyone in their room, including housekeepers, when they are not there.

In her other TikToks, Melissa addresses a wide range of travel-related topics from how to check for bed bugs to how to book airport lounge day passes
Firstly, she tells viewers to never ‘leave garbage scattered around the hotel room’ and to put it in the trash instead.
She then says that it is ‘very helpful’ to put all used towels and washcloths on the back of the toilet so they are in one place and easy to get to.
Thirdly, she says that it is well received if you tell the front desk when you check out, as ‘that way, housekeeping knows that you’re no longer in the room and can get into that room, get it clean and maybe get to go home sooner for the day.’
‘Last but not least,’ Melissa addresses the subject of tipping.
She says travelers should always leave a tip if they have had a great stay and the room was clean.
One viewer quizzed if they should tip daily or at the end of their stay, to which Melissa replied: ‘If your room is being turned during the stay, leave a tip. If not, at the end of the stay.’
