President Donald Trump joked on Friday he was going to buy an RV and drive around the country with first lady Melania Trump.

The president fumbled with the proper name for the vacation vehicle, originally calling it a ‘trailer’ before Vice President Mike Pence told him it was called an RV.

‘I’m going to have to buy one of those things and drive around town. Maybe I’ll drive back to New York with the first lady in a trailer. What do they call that?,’ President Trump said during a bill signing in the Rose Garden.

‘An RV,’ Pence told him.

‘An RV. Well you should know. Indiana’s the capital of RVs,’ Trump said referring to Pence’s home state. ‘I think I’m gonna buy an RV and travel for around in RV with our first lady.’

President Trump typically spends summer weekends at his Bedminister golf club in New Jersey but it’s unclear when he will start going there again. The Trump family also usually spends a few weeks there in August.

The image of the Trumps driving in a recreational vehicle caused chuckles among those in the Rose Garden.

Elkhart, Indiana – in the vice president’s home state – is known as the RV Capital of the World.

Many Trump supporters used to drive around to his rallies – before the coronavirus pandemic – in RVs decorated with American flags and ‘Make America Great Again’ signs.

The president made his joke during an event at the Rose Garden originally billed as a press conference but where he answered no questions. Instead he signed PPP Flexibility Act of 2020 and spent nearly 45 minutes giving a monologue on the state of the country.

He referred to the RV when he mentioned Americans were traveling again.

‘People are traveling,’ he said. ‘They’re traveling in the United States.’

Memorial Day kicked off the summer vacation season.

While most states have begun some phase of the reopening process after the coronavirus pandemic killed more than 100,000 people there are still limitations against large gatherings. People are still urged to social distance and wear a face mask.

Many popular tourist destinations remain closed.

Disney World won’t reopen until July 11 but there will be limits on visitors, social distancing encouraged, masks required and the parades and firework show are canceled.

The National Park Service said it is beginning a phased reopening for its many parks throughout the country and encourages potential visitors to check its website for the status of the park in question.

Additionally, there are no federal travel restrictions but some states have them.

In Hawaii, there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all arrivals, and Florida requires people arriving from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Louisiana to quarantine.
