  • The impala took its chances after it became stuck on an island at one of Africa’s biggest game reserves the Kruger National Park
  • After the crocodile caught the impala the hippo attacked the reptile for its prey

A South African impala took its chances trying to out-swim a crocodile and a hippo but was caught by the crocodile who then had to fight off the hippo to keep its prey.

The footage shows the impala on a small island at South Africa’s biggest game reserve the Kruger National Park.

It takes a few tense seconds for the impala to notice the crocodile rearing its head near the island.

‘It is unlikely that the croc will be able to grab the impala on land but he could catch it if the croc came onto land and chased it into the water,’ says the narrator.

Just on cue the crocodile starts climbing onto the island and the impala makes a quick decision to run for its life and springs  into the water.

The giant reptile instantly follows the impala sliding into the water and swimming terrifyingly fast.

Just as it seems the chase could not get any more horrifying for the impala a hippo joins the hunt.

‘I can’t believe what we’re seeing here this is what we normally see in East Africa,’ says the narrator.

In a matter of seconds the pursuit is over as the crocodile takes the impala underwater.

The action continues and the hippo begins fighting the crocodile for the impala .

The narrator guesses that that the bubbles shown at the end of the video are where the crocodile has managed to keep the impala away from the hippo.

The impala leaps off the island and the crocodile does not leave a minute to spare as it slides back into the water to make its chase
