Just as she’s about to leave Washington D.C. for proverbially greener pastures in New York City, Monica Lewinsky’s (Beanie Feldstein)’s life unravels in Tuesday’s episode of Impeachment: American Crime Story.

Tuesday’s episode, entitled Man Handled, picks up where the show’s first-episode flash-forward left off, where FBI agents detain Lewinsky – with the help of Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson).

She’s detained for a grueling 12 hours by the Office of the Independent Counsel, where she learns that Tripp had been recording their phone conversations.

She lets it go to voice mail, getting a message from Mike Emmick (Colin Hanks) saying they’re all set, just to let them know when she gets a hold of Monica. 

Kenneth Starr (Dan Bakkedahl) tells Emmick and Jackie Bennett (Darren Goldstein) that their jurisdiction has been broadened to include Monica Lewinsky.

They reveal they’re calling it ‘Operation Prom Night’ because it will be, ‘a half hour with a girl in a hotel room,’ though they don’t realize they’ll spend 12 hours in that room with her.

Emmick gets back to the hotel where he’s told they get a call from Linda who’s running behind, as Emmick says, ‘Who runs late to a sting operation?’

Linda gets to the Ritz Carlton and says the Metro was an ‘absolute catastrophe,’ as she looks around at everyone in the room and says, ‘It’s the right thing to do.’

She walks with the agents out of the Ritz Carlton and into the food court, as the agents tell her she doesn’t have to say anything to Monica.

Linda is back home as she lights a cigarette as her daughter Allison (Emma Mausolf) comes down asking to take the van… but she sees her mom is troubled.

She says some attorneys are coming over to ask her questions and she can’t explain it right now.

Allison says she looks like she’s about to cry as she yells at her to go back upstairs.

She looks at one of the agents on the couch with his gun holster exposed, as Monica asks if they have to stay in there.

Monica’s mother speaks with Mike and James, as James wants to know if she will cooperate, and her mother says she will.

Emmick says she will be immune from prosecution if she cooperates, including the monitored calls, but she wonders if she has immunity without the calls.

She says she will try to explain to her daughter what is happening and Mike and James will work on it, and when she leaves Mike says Starr will give her immunity but they can’t get it tonight.

Mike asks for a word with them both and says they don’t have a typewriter or a computer, and there is no way to get it in writing.

Emmick says she will have it in writing first thing tomorrow morning. He says they need these calls tonight because it is time sensitive.

She reveals that she told his father, and they all freak out as Emmick calls the father.

‘Sir, we have evidence to prosecute Monica for multiple felonies,’ as he asks why her attorney isn’t there.

Bernard says he’s there will Bill Ginsburg who’s gonna be her lawyer, as he hands him the phone.

He asks if they put her in bracelets and if she’s in custody and she says they just keep asking her to make a decision.

Emmick says they have been ‘negotiating’ with Lewinsky for the past 11 hours, as Ginsburg screams, ‘Negotiating? Really? Is that the new term of art for Unlawful detention?’

Emmick insists she could have left at any time, but Ginsburg says, ‘Shut the f**k up, you motherf***ing c**ksucker.’

He says he wants her full transactional immunity from prosecution in writing but Emmick says they can’t do that right now.

Ginsburg says to write it up and fax it, but Emmick insists they aren’t going to use a ‘communal fax’ for something so important.

Ginsburg calls him, ‘a lying sack of shit,’ as Emmick says he doesn’t see the need to use profanity, but Ginsburg responds, ‘that makes one of us. Because the plain fact of the matter is you don’t have the power to put a single goddamn thing in writing now, do you?’

James tells Emmick to, ‘f***ing hang up on this prick,’ but Emmick tells him this is a ‘real offer’ and tomorrow they will fax it to him in writing.

Ginsburg says to put Monica back on and tells her to not say a word and just walk out the door. He says he will hop on a red eye and be there in the morning, insisting that they cannot stop her.

She hangs up the phone and tells her mother to get her coat, they’re leaving, as they leave the hotel.

Emmick asks if it’s her final decision, and she says ‘Yes. Thank you so much for everything.’

Monica and her mother get back to their suite at the Watergate as the mother says she’s going to make her some tea.

Monica just sits in the chair in the corner, telling her mom they can go to Canada tonight, but she says they’d stop her at the border.

Monica wants to call Betty, but she says she can’t, and she has to look out for her own life now, her own future.

She says she’s going to take a shower as she takes out a few pill bottles and a small pair of scissors.

Monica’s mother sneaks up and opens the door seeing her crying in the shower before walking back and slumping to the floor as the episode comes to an end.

The preview for next week’s episode reveals the President finding out about the tapes, before he makes his now-infamous statement, ‘I did not have sexual relations with that woman.’
