Fascinating footage has emerged of a monkey properly using a outdoor tap to drink water in northern India.

The thirsty primate was spotted chugging fresh water before turning off the tap after quenching its thirst.

The incident was filmed on camera near a railway station in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on July 30.

It is believed that the tap was still running when the small animal approached it.

The video shows the monkey having climbed onto a small ledge to get up to the water source.

After checking the coast was clear, the monkey took several large swigs from the tap.

As the person filming the monkey approached however, it looked straight at the camera and decided it was time to head off.

But before leaving, the monkey used its paws to push the tap switch around to cut off the water flow before jumping off the ledge.

Bharat Sharma comment: ‘We might have evolved mentally and physically, but we haven’t evolved responsibly.’

Sneha Mordani added: ‘Haven’t seen anything like this! Monkey closing the tap to avoid wastage of water … and humans ? What do they do?’
