Incredible error is spotted on dozens of Anzac Day flags

Lest we forget… to use spellcheck: Incredible error is spotted on dozens of Anzac Day flags erected in Sydney’s inner-west

  • 30 Anzac Day flags in Sydney’s inner-west were spotted with a spelling error
  • The flags with photos of soldiers read ‘Lest we forgot’ instead of ‘Lest we forget’
  • The council say the error was due to a miscommunication with printing company

An embarrassing spelling mistake has been spotted on dozens of Anzac Day flags erected on the streets of Sydney’s inner-west.

Thirty large flags showing pictures of servicemen were mistakenly erected with the words ‘Lest we forgot’ instead of ‘Lest we forget’.

City of Canada Bay council said the error was due to a miscommunication between council staff and the printing company responsible for producing the banners.

All the banners were removed in two hours after the council was made aware of the mistake by a resident.

The council’s general manager Peter Gainsford said: ‘I have today been made aware of banners that have been erected in our area containing an extremely unfortunate and disrespectful error.’

‘I am extremely disappointed and accept full responsibility,’ Mr Gainsford said.

‘I have spoken to representatives of the Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne RSL branches this morning and unreservedly apologised for any offence.’

Social media was flooded with angry comments, with many suggesting the banners were made overseas.

A spokesman from City of Canada Bay council told Daily Mail Australia the banners were produced in Australia.

‘How hard is it to proof read,’ another user wrote.

One added: ‘Totally unacceptable take them down, just appalling, an insult to all who served!’

‘Lest we forget’ is a phrase commonly used in war remembrance ceremonies, such as Anzac Day on April 25 and Remembrance Day on November 11.
