Roger, 56, said: ‘Every once in a while a large number of Tuna Crab will settle into the canyon off La Jolla here in San Diego.

‘They are so numerous they crowd out almost all the habitat space normally used by the benthic animals in the area.

‘Hence you see a lot of deep water species, milling around looking for somewhere to land, as you do in this video.

‘About two to three years ago there was a different large influx and those crabs persisted for about two years. Just as they were cleared out, we have this new influx.

‘With changing ocean conditions and water temps in the area, this may become a much more regular event that persists for a lot longer than past years.’
