Dramatic footage has emerged showing a would-be thief being foiled in his plan to steal a van when the vehicle’s owner chased after him.

The van was stolen from a car park in Mornington, Melbourne about 3.30 on Thursday afternoon.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the tradesman who owns the van chasing after the would-be thief.

The thief can be seen scoping the area while checking no-one is around before climbing into the driver’s seat.

Just as the thief is driving the van out of the carpark, the vehicle’s owner spots it and chases after him.

The van’s owner manages to rip the door open as the van drives away, causing the thief to fall out onto the street.

The van continues to drive down the road and only comes to a stop after hitting several parked cars.

A citizen’s arrest is then performed by the van owner, who is assisted by a couple of witnesses in holding the thief down until the police arrive.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle as a result of the incident.

He was also taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
