He travelled from his hometown of Moroda, Eastern India, to a court to fight the accusations.

Since then, he claims he has been shunned by his community and is unable to find work.

As a result, he says he is in mountains of debt but cannot move away to find work as he has elderly parents to look after at home.

Mr Singh was desperate to clear his name and prove to his parents that he is not guilty of the crime.

But he carried his mother and father on his back for 40 kilometres (25 miles) as they sat in wooden baskets on either side of his shoulders.

Mr Singh claims that although he is educated, he cannot even get married because of the incident.

Campaigners claim that false accusations are being committed across India.

Advocate Prabhudan Marandi said: ‘It is not the first time something like this is happening. Several false cases are being filed.’

Mr Singh said he just wants to clear his name before his parents, who were not named, pass away.
