Indiana cop is fired after he was seen confronting two black men for ‘acting suspicious’

A deputy constable in Indiana was fired after footage showed him stop two black men in a car in a Nordstrom parking lot for ‘suspicious behavior.’

In video posted to YouTube on November 13, two cousins claimed they first noticed the officer watching them while they were at Nordstrom Rack in the Castleton neighborhood of Indianapolis.

The pair said that the officer watched them purchase items and he then followed them back to the car.

Footage shows the men ask the officer several times why they were singled out and why he wanted to see their driver licenses. The officer in question was identified by WTHR as Lawrence Township Deputy Constable Daryl Jones.

They also asked him could they speak to his supervisor as the officer gets increasingly irate and claims he pulled them over for ‘acting suspicious.’

‘I’m not calling the supervisor,’ Jones says, to which one of the men says: ‘You’re not pulling me over neither.’

‘What do you need my I.D. for, sir?’ one of the men asks Jones.

‘Because you want to run your mouth,’ he responds. After one of the men tells Jones he didn’t have the right to run the vehicle’s license plates, Jones shouts: ‘I got my rights to do anything I want to do, I’m a police officer.’

‘Why are you running your mouth to me. I’ll pull you over and I’ll tow your car. Get your drivers licence, I will lock you up. Show me a drivers licence, that’s all I want to see,’ the man is heard saying.

One of the men then tells him: ‘You have no reason to pull me over, we weren’t in traffic sir, we were pulling out of a traffic spot.’

Jones was off duty at the time of the incident and was working as a security guard at Nordstrom Rack. The outlet told NBC News that he doesn’t work there anymore.

Jones proceeds to tell the men: ‘I’m stopping you because you’re suspicious.

‘Don’t threaten me, are you going to threaten a police officer?  Why don’t you shut up, I’m not talking to you.’

Another law enforcement officer arrives at the scene and Jones is heard telling him: ‘Those guys were in there, they got a bunch of stuff, then they run their mouth to me as they were leaving.

‘Then they didn’t want to show me their ID. They didn’t steal items, they bought a bunch of stuff.’

The officer comes back and has a conversation with the men,  and one of the victims tell them: ‘I don’t want to say that he’s racially profiling, but it is what it is.’

The officer then tells them: ‘We can run plates for any reason or no reason at all.

‘What he does have to have is he has to have what’s called reasonable suspicion in order to make a stop. He has to have some sort of reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed.’

The officer agreed with the men that he did not know what Jones’ reasoning was for stopping them in their car.

After speaking with the other officer for a period of time, Jones walks back to the car and tells the men they are free to go before walking away.

Lawrence Township Chief Constable Terry Burns claimed that he watched the 17 minute long video and he terminated his employment within two hours of watching it. He claimed Jones worked within the department for 20 years.

He also confiscated his badge, radio and constable identification, WTHR reported.

Aaron Blackwell told RTV6 after the incident: ‘He watched the clerk bag everything for us and he watched us push two carts out so, he wasn’t suspicious he just wanted to act.

‘If you’re going to prove something or anything, anything that I have no control over as far as me having a conflict with somebody that has authority, I’m definitely going to record it.’

He claimed that nobody from Lawrence Township called him to apologize over the incident.
