Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has announced his retirement from the NFL. 

The 29-year-old athlete fought back tears as he revealed the news during an emotional press conference held on Saturday night.  

‘This is not an easy decision. It’s the hardest decision of my life, but it is the right decision for me,’ Luck stated during the presser. 

The quarterback’s career has been hampered by a string of injuries, which have led him to become ‘mentally worn down’. 

He missed the entirety of the 2017 season following surgery on his shoulder during the offseason. 

Luck has played for Colts since 2012 – the year he was named the No 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. 

The bombshell news comes less than two weeks out from the start of the 2019 NFL season, which will kick off on Thursday September 5.
