A kangaroo carrying a joey in her pouch was put down after it was shot in the leg with an arrow.

A Parks and Conservation Service (PCS) ranger found the wounded marsupial last Monday in the front yard of a home the Canberra suburb of Hackett.

The grim discovery came after the PCS received numerous reports that there was an injured animal in the area.

Soon after, it was taken to the veterinarian for assessment. 

However, the kangaroo was eventually put down in order to prevent further suffering. 

Her joey was also put down because it was ‘too young to be cared for’, according to Yahoo7 News. 

A spokesperson for the PCS said, ‘Aggravated cruelty attracts maximum penalties of 2 years imprisonment and/or $75,000’.

The PCS has appealed to the public to report any information they may have on who shot the animal.
