Jeffrey Epstein died of an apparent suicide in his jail cell on Saturday. A former prisoner who spent months in the same high-profile inmate block as the billionaire financier has said there is ‘no way’ he killed himself
A former prisoner who spent months in the same high-profile inmate block as Jeffrey Epstein has said it would have been impossible for the billionaire financier to kill himself in his cell.
The ex-convict spoke to the New York Post on the condition of anonymity in the wake of Epstein’s apparent suicide Saturday morning in the 9 South special housing unit at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.
‘There’s no way that man could have killed himself. I’ve done too much time in those units. It’s an impossibility,’ said the insider, whose reason for incarceration wasn’t disclosed.
The account comes as conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death are gaining traction and federal officials have launched a investigation into the circumstances.
Reports claimed that Epstein hanged himself, but the former inmate who spoke to the Post said he wouldn’t have been able to do.
They said the sheets are paper and thus wouldn’t have been strong enough to hold a 200lb-Epstein. Even if they were, the inmate said, the ceilings are ‘eight or nine feet’ high with nothing to attach to.
‘They don’t give you enough in there that could successfully create an instrument of death,’ they said.
‘You want to write a letter, they give you rubber pens and maybe once a week a piece of paper. Nothing hard or made of metal.
‘And there’s a cop at the door about every nine minutes, whether you’re on suicide watch or not.’

Epstein had been placed on suicide watch two weeks ago after he was found in his cell with bruising on his neck.
He was taken off the watch at the end of July and therefore wasn’t on it at the time of his death, according to prison sources.
The decision to remove Epstein, who was possibly the most high-profile inmate in the federal jail system, from suicide watch has both baffled and outraged former wardens and veterans of the federal prison system alike, leading them to demand a reason why.
‘For them to pull him off suicide watch is shocking,’ Cameron Lindsay, a former warden, told NBC News.
‘For someone this high-profile, with these allegations and this many victims, who has had a suicide attempt in the last few weeks, you can take absolutely no chances. You leave him on suicide watch until he’s out of there.’
The former inmate said that if Epstein had been on watch, he would have been put in straight jacket to prevent him from injuring himself.
Even when an inmate is not on suicide watch, MCC requires two guards to check on prisoners every 30 minutes, but sources say that procedure was not followed the night Epstein died.

A separate source revealed to DailyMail.com that Epstein actually told prison guards and fellow inmates that he believed someone had tried to kill him in the weeks before his death.
The insider, who had seen the disgraced financier on several occasions during his incarceration at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, also claims that the normally reserved Epstein seemed to be in good spirits.
‘There was no indication that he might try to take his own life,’ the source told DailyMail.com
‘From what I saw, he was finally starting to adjust to prison. I think he was comforted by the rigidity of his new life.’
It remains unclear whether any other inmates have been successful at taking their own life in the block where Epstein was housed.
The former inmate who spoke to the Post briefly described how horrible his time in 9 South, saying: ‘The damage that unit can do to someone.
‘It’s like you’re an animal and you’ve been brought into a kennel. A guy like Jeffrey, it’s like, “Holy sh-t.”
‘I told my parents not to come there. God wasn’t in the building.
‘I’ve had some heavy incidents in the building. What happened is permanent.
‘Some of the guards are on a major power trip. They know guys there are suffering. They know something the rest of the world hasn’t seen, that a place like this exists in this country, and they get off on it.
‘If the guards see that the guy is breaking, they’re going to help you break.’

Many people have speculated that one or more of the powerful people implicated in the disgraced billionaire’s alleged sex-trafficking ring could have put a hit on him to protect themselves.
Among them was President Donald Trump, who has retweeted conspiracy theories linking Bill and Hillary Clinton to Epstein’s death.
Trump’s Twitter feed includes a link to a breaking news site which claims that unsealed court documents revealed ‘top Democrats, including Bill Clinton, took private trips to Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘pedophilia island”.
The president also retweeted a post from Terrence K Williams, an actor and comedian who is known for his conservative views.
Williams tweeted: ‘Died of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH ? Yeah right! How does that happen…[Epstein] had information on Bill Clinton & now he’s dead.’

Other politicians also shared suspicion over Epstein’s death.
Claire McCaskill, a former Democratic Senator, said: ‘Something stinks to high heaven. How does someone on suicide watch hang himself with no intervention? Impossible. Unless…’
A number of other high-profile Washington figures have demanded more information over the circumstances.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: ‘We need answers. Lots of them.’
Presidential hopefuls Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand also demanded transparency as to the details of Epstein’s death.
Some internet users observed that the New York prison where he died was under the watch of Attorney General William Barr, who was chosen to head the Justice Department by Trump, once an associate and friend of Epstein.
Another extraordinary theory was that Epstein was assassinated by Saudi officials. One tweet read: ‘The murder of Jeffrey Epstein is the most blatant display of the power of the deep state I’ve seen since the CIA killed JFK.’
Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell around 7am Saturday and was rushed to nearby New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hours later, a black bag believed to contain Epstein’s body was pictured being taken out of the hospital.
The body was later switched into a white van belonging to a medical examiner, before it was transported away.
A coroner will now perform an investigation.
