Costco has its sights set on expansion in Australia with the construction of a $77million depot that will serve as a distribution centre for all warehouses in Australia.

The American giant was given the green light by the New South Wales government to build the centre on a whopping 14 hectares property in western Sydney.

It is intended as an investment into Costco’s future into the Australian market as the company plans to open a new warehouse every year.

The depot will have the capability to distribute to 30 warehouses.

There are currently nine across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia with three more warehouses in development in western Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

The distribution centre will create close to 1000 new jobs, including 730 jobs in construction and 211 office-style roles.

This will be the company’s biggest facility in Australia.

Costco Managing Director Patrick Noone said: ‘As we expand our business, we require a larger facility to serve the needs of our members here in Australia. This location is ideal for housing our depot and providing hundreds of jobs in Sydney’s booming west.’

Mr Noone also said that Costco looks forward to making economic contributions, particularly to the western Sydney area.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: ‘This new employment hub will also provide people living in western Sydney the chance to work locally so they can spend less time commuting and more time with their families.’

The first phase of development is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2019. 

The second phase is expected to be complete within five years.

Costco first came to Australia in 2009.
