Inside MAFS’ Cameron Merchant and Jules Robinson’s car crash wedding

Married At First Sight stars Cameron Merchant and Jules Robinson were married in Sydney on Sunday, with a special on the happy event airing on A Current Affair on Tuesday night.

Host Sylvia Jeffreys described the wedding as, ‘a beautiful day and a pretty spectacular party’.

However, before the viewers saw Jules and Cameron walk down the aisle, they first had to sit through a full 30-minute episode of A Current Affair.

Once underway, the special felt more like an advertisement for wedding services, with a number of brands showcased throughout the hour.

Some of the brands mentioned included DeBortoli Wines, Cerrone Jewellers, The Fabled Florette, Chandeliers To Die For, the QT hotel, Velani by Nicky, who made the reality star’s dress, Blow Bar, and the Alpha restaurant.

A number of viewers took to Twitter hit out at what appeared to be product placement on the show.

‘Seems like an advertisement for wedding services,’ one viewer wrote.

Another raged at the couple’s controversial decision to broadcast their nuptials.

‘The fact that I am seeing the A Current Affair logo at the bottom left hand corner makes me sick. What next? 60 Minutes meets Ninja Warrior.’

During the special, some awkwardness came in the form of a crude joke made at Jules’ hen’s party, held at Blow Bar.

‘Any woman will tell you what a hen’s party needs is is a topless waiter and a good blow… dry’ the voice-over stated.

The hen’s then party moved to a boat, with a performer dancing in front of the near-empty space.

Even bridesmaid Heidi Latcham was absent, with Jules holding up a picture of her on an iPhone screen instead.

The wedding ceremony itself was no less bizarre, with the celebrant having lost her voice and struggling to speak clearly through the vows.

Once the couple were announced as man and wife, Cam and Jules treated their guests to an interpretive dance set to a Kylie Minogue number.

The guests were not spared from the awkwardness, with a heavily pregnant Cyrell Paule mistakenly seated next to her ex Nic Jovanovic, who she had formerly ‘married’ on MAFS.

Earlier in the episode, Cam and Jules talked presenter Sylvia through the lavish details of their wedding, which included hand-peeled roses.

‘Hand peeled roses? Is that not a touch high-maintenance,’ a fan wrote on Twitter.

In contrast with their non-legally binding wedding on Married At First Sight, the couple planned their entire wedding themselves.

They chose the hand-peeled roses, their venue, wines and food, leaving no detail to chance.

They even picked an elaborate floral arch to sit over the top of their wedding table, flanked by chandeliers.

An incredible 2000 roses were hand-peeled on the day of the wedding, with Cam revealing he wanted to treat his bride-to-be.

‘It’s every girls’ dream for their wedding day to be as special as this,’ he said, beaming at his future wife.

The Greek-themed wedding menu, served at Alpha restaurant where the reception was held, consisted of a starter of yogurt and cucumber dip, followed by fresh chilli and figs baked with lemon-infused ouzo.

Next up was prawn and vongole saganaki, tomato-baked with an ouzo cream and lots of fetta.

In contrast to her frock on MAFS, Jules wanted to ‘look really different to last time’ opting for an elaborate wedding dress.

She tried on one gown which consisted of a floaty, feathered skirt, a strapless sweetheart neckline and embellished bodice.

‘I think he’d love it,’ she said of Cam’s potential reaction to the frock. ‘He’d think I look like a princess’.

However, she later chose a pink tulle dress with a sweetheart neckline, full skirt, and ruffles throughout, instead of the beaded number.

The couple then headed off ring shopping, picking up diamonds at Cerrone Jewellers in Sydney.

Jules joked that next she’ll get a push present ‘for the other hand’ once the pair have a child.

Wedding dance practice was next up, with Cam and Jules practicing an interpretive dance to unleash at the reception.

For her hen’s party, Jules held a shindig at Blow Bar in Balmain, with her hens getting dolled up while topless waiters served champagne and espresso martinis.

The ladies then headed off for a chartered boat ride, dancing to tunes as they skipped across the harbour.

During the party, Jules got candid about the breakdown of her relationship with Melissa Lucarelli, who was dropped as her bridesmaid.

‘Do you know what? My nearest and dearest are here right now. That’s all that matters!’ she insisted.

Cam meanwhile enjoyed a laid back bucks dinner with his Married At First Sight co-star Nic Jovanovic and radio star Matt de Groot.

The lads then headed out for a well-behaved game of cricket in a local park near Rushcutters Bay.

On the big day, Jules treated her bridesmaids to silk dressing gowns with their names embroidered on the back.

After Cam arrived in a red bus for the ceremony, he walked down the aisle in a white tuxedo as a female guitarist played an acoustic song.

Jules said in her vows: ‘I give you this ring to symbolise my personal promise of an unbreakable love and trust.’

They then showed off the interpretive dance they’d been practicing in the lead up, set to an acoustic version of Kylie Minogue’s Love at First Sight.

A night of partying followed, with Jules changing into a simpler white dress with a beaded bodice, and the pair seemingly truly smitten throughout the evening.

Giving a speech to the assembled guests, Cam waxed lyrical: ‘Doesn’t she look beautiful? Life, realistically, a little bit of a risk, is a bit of a gamble.

‘That risk turns out to be one of the most beautiful and one of the most fulfilling days of my life right now’.

Speaking of their future plans, the newlyweds told host Sylvia Jeffreys they were already planning a family.

‘We want a family, a happy little family, and help each other to strive and grow,’ Cameron said.

‘I’d like a little mini version of Cam. Exactly the same, just little, with the same passion for life and the same aura Cam carries with him,’ Jules said.

She concluded: ‘He’s just a special, special human being’.
