Inside Reese Witherspoon’s split from Jim Toth

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth shocked fans last week when they announced the end of the marriage.

The actress, 47, and the actor, 42, had kept their marital woes hidden before sharing their ‘difficult decision’ to divorce just days before their 12th wedding anniversary.

In a joint statement they announced they had ‘enjoyed so many wonderful years together’ and said they would be ‘moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.’

While the announcement came as a surprise, the writing was on the wall for the couple – who share son Tennessee James, 10 – with rumours of hectic lifestyles and a midlife crisis behind their separation.

Now, MailOnline takes a look at what caused the end of one Hollywood’s seemingly picture perfect unions.

Inside Reese Witherspoon’s split from Jim Toth: How actress’ ‘busy schedule’ and husband’s ‘midlife crisis’ played a part in their divorce (pictured in 2017)

A midlife crisis

One of the causes of their split is said to be because Jim is ‘no longer the same man’ that Reese married.

An alleged friend of the couple explained how he began ‘dressing like someone half his age’ with ‘weird jewellery and tattoos.’

The pal explained to The US Sun: ‘Jim is the one who has changed massively just in the last few years. Jim just isn’t the guy Reese married and had a son with anymore.’

Reese and Jim sold their production company Hello Sunshine for almost $1 billion in 2021, with the money sending them ‘in different directions.’

They added: ‘His personality, his attitude and his whole take on life really changed when he got out of the agency business and decided he was tired of that stuffy world and being in the service business in general.’

‘Call it a midlife crisis if you want but that’s when the tattoos, the chunky, weird jewellery, and dressing like somebody half his age really took hold.’

The pal added that the exes will continued to co-parent their son, something that Reese is experienced in as she also shares two children with ex husband Ryan Phillippe.

Busy schedules that lead to ‘separate lives’

Reese and Jim Toth reportedly lived separate lives for months before their divorce, which was reportedly fueled by the actress’ busy schedule.

The Legally Blonde star has a reputation as one of the most in demand women in Hollywood but this is said to have caused the pair to ‘go days without interacting’.

Insiders revealed to RadarOnline the couple would reportedly only speak to discuss their family, while Jim would consistently miss important events in her life.

Friends of the actress revealed his behavior had been ‘raising eyebrows’ long before their split.

‘Jim is hardly ever with her,’ a source told the outlet. ‘It’s always like that’.

They fell out of love

Despite saying they enjoyed ‘many wonderful years together’ as they announced their split, insiders claimed that the marriage had steadily become platonic.

‘There’s no big scandal or drama, just two people who essentially became co-parents and don’t really have any romantic feelings for each other anymore,’ a source told PageSix.

They added that the Oscar-winning actress had ‘once liked the fact that (Jim) was just a solid, dependable and stable guy,’ which she was attracted to after ‘years of s*** with her first husband Ryan Phillippe.

A source told People magazine after the news was announced that Reese and Jim’s split is ‘amicable.’

‘They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone,’ the insider said.

Fighting for a lost cause

An insider revealed to Us Weekly that Reese ‘never wanted her marriage to end, but it’s not a secret this has been brewing for some time.’

Over time, their relationship migrated from romantic to platonic, and they eventually called it quits.

The source continued to state that the ultimate reason for their split was because they were becoming distant.

According to the insider, the pair had a ‘very healthy relationship’ and ‘a lot of great times together.’

In spite of it all, ‘like a lot of couples, they grew apart.’

Sorting out their finances

An insider reportedly told US Weekly back in 2021, the couple had quietly been liquidating their joint assets for a couple of years  before taking the final step to dissolving their marriage.

‘They decided their marriage wasn’t going to last forever and that they should have a plan for splitting up their assets that wouldn’t destroy what they built together,’ the source told the media outlet at the time.

Reese sold a large portion her production company Hello Sunshine for $900 million in August 2021. Jim served as one of the founding board members.

Reese reportedly retained an interest in the company and continues to work for Hello Sunshine as a producer on several projects including Where the Crawdads Sing and the Prime series Daisy Jones and the Six.

‘Instead of having to split up a huge company with dozens of employees and several divisions, they have a big pile of money — and there’s plenty for everybody,’ the insider explained.

The twosome have reportedly sold several of their homes, including a farmhouse in Malibu in 2020, an English Country-style manor located in Los Angeles and a six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion in Nashville.

A separate property in Malibu, believed to belong to them, has been listed for sale, according to Redfin, for $8 million.

The Your Place or Mine star has been forging ahead with new projects.

Keeping up appearances

While the writing may have been on the wall for a while, Reese and Jim kept their marital problems out of the public eye.

The Oscar-winning actress shared snaps with Jim in December 2022, as they enjoyed Christmas time with their family.

In July 2022, Reese shared photos on Instagram of herself with Jim to mark his birthday, captioning the set: ‘Happy birthday to my sweet hubby, JT!

Don’t know anyone who loves Tour de France / road biking / @arsenal / @nashvillesc / @steelers …. oh and GOLF … basically all sports more than YOU. Love you so much!’

She also marked their 11th wedding anniversary last year in March 2022 on Instagram: ‘Happy Anniversary JT!! 11 years of adventures, love and laughter. I feel so lucky to share this wonderful life with you.’
