Inside the head of… Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum, 44, was one of the world’s most successful supermodels before moving into business and television. She has been married twice, most recently to British singer Seal, with whom she has four children. The couple divorced in 2015. She is a judge on ‘America’s Got Talent’ and hosts modelling reality show ‘Project Runway’.

What is your earliest memory?

I have a couple, both from when I was four: my dad teaching me chess, and falling down the staircase and bashing my knees.

What sort of child were you?

Very outgoing. A lot of my playtime was outside and when it got dark, that was my sign to go home. It was different then. Kids can’t roam around like we used to.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Sunbathing naked. If there’s a place on a private island or a beach where there aren’t any people, I like to go skinny-dipping or sunbathe nude.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I was on The Tonight Show promoting the Victoria’s Secret $11 million bra made of diamonds. Jay Leno asked me to yodel, so I took a deep breath and my bra popped open.

Tell us a secret about yourself

I’m scared of flying. On the plane I am always bursting into tears, pressing the call button and asking a stewardess to sit next to me, or if there’s no seat there I’ll ask if I can go and sit with them in the kitchen area.

What is your most unappealing habit?

I eat a lot of garlic so I probably don’t always have the best breath. I eat it raw because I love making fresh salads.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

Studio 54 in 1978 when everyone in New York was having a great time, women were looking fabulous and people were dancing in clubs and drinking their drinks, not just holding them like they do now.

Have you ever cheated death?

I got bad food poisoning in Singapore. Our team was eating from a street vendor but I ate at the hotel because I couldn’t afford to get sick. Guess what? I got sick. Really really sick. I needed to have a blood transfusion.

What one thing should every man know about women?

We want a king who treats us like a queen. We want to be respected, we want honesty, we want loyalty but, most of all, we want to be loved.

What skill should everyone have?

You have to be able to laugh at yourself. Being a model, you walk into a room and people sometimes step back a little bit. Smiling at someone or doing something silly immediately changes the mood.

What song do you want played at your funeral?

There’s not going to be a funeral for me. I don’t want to be a hassle to anyone.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

I don’t really have anything to complain about. I do see a few grey hairs; once there was one and now there are 20.

What is the worst thing anyone has ever said to you?

When I started modelling, so-called ‘heroin chic’ was in fashion. I looked too happy and healthy and so was told I wouldn’t make it.

What is the worst job you’ve had?

On one photoshoot I did for a bridal magazine, I had to get ‘married’ 12 times. The photographer was so mean to me. He made me cry.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

My mum told me: ‘Love the person you see in the mirror.’ You have to be happy with your life because you only have one.

LAST WORD

Last gig you went to?

Drake at the Staples Center in LA. He was like a panther, prowling from side to side on the stage.

Last book you read?

Rumi: The Big Red Book by Coleman Barks. I like going deep into the poems. Sometimes it’s good to be quiet and listen to your heart and your mind.

Last TV show you watched?

Project Runway, which is a bit embarrassing because I host it.
