Inside the quirky town of 4,000 Australians being dubbed the new Byron Bay

A tiny town with just 4,000 people in it is fast becoming the ‘new Byron Bay’ because of its eco-conscious landscape, proximity to waterfalls, ‘hippie’ cafes and local feel.

Located in the Blackall Range, about 30 kilometres south west of Caloundra, Maleny is renowned for its lush environs and numerous scenic spots, complete with sensational produce and plenty of outdoor activities.

Byron Bay, with its stunning beaches and boutique clothing stores, is quickly becoming ‘overloved’ by travellers, and the mystic charm the area once had has somewhat been lost to commercialism and crowded pubs.

‘Here life revolves around Maleny’s vibrant Maple Street, with its organic cafes, eclectic fashion boutiques, brilliant bookstores and historic hotel. There’s a thriving art scene here, with contemporary art galleries and artist’s co-operatives.

‘The region is also synonymous with some of the best dairy and cheese products in Australia. Must-visits include Maleny Dairies, Maleny Cheese and Maleny Food Co, where local dairy is used to make a delicious range of gelato.
