Whether it’s a big birthday party or a delicious dinner, many of us share our most special moments with our followers on our Instagram Stories.

Now, as 2021 draws to a close, Instagram has launched a new feature called Playback to help you reminisce over your highlights of the year.

Playback offers users the chance to select up to 10 stories from their archive to share with their followers in a special package on their Story.

How to use Playback 

  1. Open Instagram
  2. You should see a message at the top of your feed to create a Playback
  3. If you see a 2021 Playback story, you can tap on 2021 sticker to see your Playback
  4. Search for @creator account and click through your Stories EOY highlight, click on 2021 sticker to see your Playback  

Instagram announced the new Playback feature, which launches globally today, in a blog.

‘We all know the feeling: after another tough year, January 2021 seems light years ago,’ it said.

‘From the lockdown walks of February, to reuniting with friends in July, to your first trip away in September, this year has been one of both meaningful and mundane moments.

‘That’s why this year, Instagram is helping users reminisce over their 2021 memories – enter Playback, a brand-new end-of-year feature in IG Stories that will give people a chance to reflect on their year and the highlights they shared through Instagram Stories, as well as who they shared them with and everything they explored.’

Users can select up to 10 stories from their Stories archive to share with their followers.

These stories will be put in a special package, which you can then post on your profile.

‘Users will see a message on their feed inviting them to create their Playback – and if they see a 2021 Story, they will simply need to click on the 2021 sticker within this to view and post their own Playback story,’ Instagram added.

The launch of Playback comes shortly after Instagram announced that the chronological feed is finally making a return.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the news during a hearing before a Senate subcommittee yesterday, saying that the platform is ‘actively working on’ it.

The timeline for the launch remains unclear, although Mosseri said it is likely to be ‘in the first quarter of next year.’

Instagram followed on from Mr Mosseri’s hearing with further information on Twitter this morning. 

‘We want people to have meaningful control over their experience,’ it explained.

‘We’ve been experimenting with Favourites, a way for you to decide whose posts you want to see higher up, and we’re working on another option to see posts from people you follow in chronological order.’

Instagram added that the chronological feed won’t be the same one that we knew back in 2015.

‘We want to be clear that we’re creating new options — providing people with more choices so they can decide what works best for them — not switching everyone back to a chronological feed,’ it added. ‘You can expect more on this early next year!’

Instagram launches crackdown on fake accounts with new feature giving users more information

Instagram has launched a crackdown on fake accounts, introducing a new feature showing users information about who is really behind a username.

The Photo-sharing app’ more than 1 billion users will now be able to evaluate the authenticity of accounts, weeks after parent Facebook rolled out similar measures in a bid to weed out fake accounts on its social media platform.

The ‘About This Account’ feature will allow users to see the advertisements an account is running, the country where the account is located, username changes in the past year as well as other details.

To learn more about an account, go to their Profile, tap the … menu and then select ‘About This Account.’ 

There, you will see the date the account joined Instagram, the country where the account is located, accounts with shared followers, any username changes in the last year and any ads the account is currently running. 

Instagram also plans to significantly boost the number of verified accounts for public figures, celebrities, and global brands. 

Along with the account username, applicants will need to provide full real names and a copy of legal or business identification.

Instagram also said it will allow the use of third-party apps such as DUO Mobile and Google Authenticator for two-factor authentication to help users securely log in to their accounts.
