A woman was raped by a man she met on Instagram after she bumped into him by chance at a gathering.

The victim reluctantly let Joao Neto, 28, sleep on her sofa when her partner suggested he stay over on February 12, 2017.

Neto made his way up to her bedroom in the night and raped her, despite her desperate attempts to wake the man she was romantically linked with, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

When she tried to stir her partner, who was sleeping next to her, he laughed, kissed her and fell back to sleep.

The Brazilian rapist, who was living in Sydney on an Australian student visa, has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison with a six-year non-parole period.

The woman befriended Neto on Instagram in December 2016 before bumping into him by chance at the gathering, the court heard.

On a later occasion, she allowed the man to sleep on her sofa at the request of her partner.

She woke to find him touching her inappropriately while the man who she was romantically linked to slept beside her.

The woman woke her partner up but he did nothing, a court heard.

He also slapped his victim during the attack, the court heard.

After the attack, Neto told his victim that their encounter ‘started bad but ended good’.

He was found guilty of four counts of sexual intercourse without consent, and one count of common assault on September 13 of this year.

Neto’s girlfriend was present in court when the sentence was given.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Neto’s victim described how she had no idea much a rape could break a person and her life is now ‘changed, cautious and closed.’
