Inter Milan expect an improved bid worth around £110million from Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku this week.

The Italians rejected an opening bid of £85m plus full-back Marcos Alonso for the 28-year-old Belgium striker but are willing to sell for the right price.

Chelsea have been talking to Inter after it became clear Borussia Dortmund would not budge in their stance over Erling Haaland where ‘only a crazy offer’ would tempt them to sell.

Lukaku had said he wanted to stay with Inter where he scored 30 goals and won the Italian title last season but their financial issues dictate they must listen to substantial offers for their players.

They have already started to assess potential replacements including Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata and Tottenham target Dusan Vlahovic at Fiorentina.

Lukaku is aware of the situation and has expressed a willingness to move back to Chelsea if the clubs can reach an agreement.

Chelsea have issues in front of goal with Timo Werner failing to find his touch so far. They have already sold Olivier Giroud to AC Milan while Tammy Abraham has interest from Aston Villa, West Ham, Arsenal and Atalanta.

Lukaku first joined Chelsea ten years ago as an 18-year-old from Anderlecht but was eventually sold to Everton where he established himself as a Premier League force.

Chelsea tried to sign him back only for the player to join Manchester United instead in a £75m transfer.

He scored 27 goals in his first season but the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw a change in style and Lukaku struggled to fit in. He was sold to Inter for £68m with United retaining a four per cent sell-on clause.

Now he is preparing to return to Stamford Bridge and spearhead the European champions’ attack on the Premier League title.
