There are 20 fish and chip shops featured on the list. They have all been nominated for the 2023 National Fish and Chip Shop Awards. 

There are approximately 10,500 fish and chips shops across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and employ around 2.5 million people. 

The awards will take place on February 28, 2023 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. 

National Federation of Fish Friers president Andrew Cook said: ‘We are delighted to be bringing the awards back as they are so important as the main driver of standards in our industry. 

‘They are also a fantastic opportunity to highlight key issues that affect our businesses, it is also a great place for operators and suppliers to meet and where many friendships are formed.’ 

The awards are being relaunched having had a two-year break because of Covid and will be hosted by comedian Jason Manford.

TV celebrity and fashion stylist Gok Wan and two friends created the Golden Chopsticks Awards in 2017. 

The awards not only recognise excellence in Chinese restaurants, but those of South East and East Asia. 

The team has a panel of judges headed by the celebrated chef Ken Hom

The awards were held in the London Marriot Hotel, Grosvenor Square on September 26, 2022 in front of 450 guests. 

The process for picking the 2023 winner is expected to start shortly with another gala event in London in the Autumn. 

Thuy Pham, owner and executive chef at Little Viet Kitchen in London said when he won the award of Best Restaurant in England in 2019, it had a massive impact on his business. 

He was featured on the BBC’s ‘One Day that Changed My Life’ documentary. 

He said: ‘It’s a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and pride to win such a prestigious award. It has always been my dream to help elevate Vietnamese cuisine in the West and I will be forever grateful to the Golden Chopsticks Awards for the opportunity to achieve this.’

For Indian and South Asian Cuisine there are a plethora of awards available including the British Curry Awards and the Asian and Restaurant and Takeaway Awards. 

During the British Curry Awards, the founder Enam Ali has warned that inflation is having a troubling impact on the industry and if it continues at the current pace, it will drive up the cost of a curry. 

So far, curry restaurants have seen the cost of oil double along with increases in the price of raw ingredients. 

The average price of a curry could hit £30 and may lead to the closure of thousands of restaurants. 

A 25kg sack of onions has doubled in price, which along with the other increases could see a £4 onion bhaji hit £12 per person.

A chicken tikka masala could increase from £7 to £17.  

For the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards, they are preparing for the 2023 season, with nominations for recognition opening on March 1. 

Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite restaurants, who will be shortlisted and appear at regional events. 

The shortlisted candidates will then gather on October 8 at a an event in London where the overall Champion of Champions will be announced. 

In 2022 that prize was awarded to Ruby in Hertford.  

The British Kebab Awards are also preparing for their 10th ceremony with a shortlist set to be announced for the 18 prizes on offer.

They range from Best Newcomer or Chef of the Year to the Best Kebab Van or the Customer Satisfaction award.

Ibrahim Dogus, the founder of the British Kebab Awards, said: ‘Covid has had a huge impact amongst businesses across the country, yet many kebab businesses have tried hard to continue to provide a good service to their communities. the kebab industry, despite all the difficulties and challenges it faces, has continued to grow from strength to strength. The 10th British Kebab Awards will be even bigger and better than the last one.’

He said: ‘The kebab industry is now estimated to be worth over £2.8bn to the British economy and every day, more than 1.5m kebabs are sold across Britain. The UK’s first kebab shop, Istanbul Restaurant in Soho, opened during the Second World War and pictures of it feature in the Imperial War Museum. 

‘However, it was not until 1966 that the famous doner kebab – cooked on a vertical spit – first appeared with the opening of the Hodja Nasreddin Kebab House by Çetin Bukey and Kojay Hüsey in North London’s Newington Green.

‘There are now over 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK selling around 2,500 tonnes of lamb and chicken doner a week. There are also around 200 doner kebab manufacturers in the UK, with a turnover in excess of £750m.’
