Irish café workers turn detective to trace woman dumping rubbish in their bin

A pair of hotel workers honed their detective skills to figure out who dumped rubbish in their bins.

Christopher Atkinson, night porter at the Charleville Lodge Hotel in Dublin, spotted a woman driving into their car park at night and throwing a large bag into a dumpster.

After Mr Atkinson, 53, informed Paul Stenson, general manager of the hotel and its sister cafe The White Moose, the pair went on a mission to find the culprit.

The video starts with Mr Stenson, 39, talking to the camera.

He says: ‘I’m out here at the moment doing a little video but Chris has just come in and what did you just say there Chris?’

Mr Atkinson replies: ‘Five minutes ago we had a car, a black car, pull into the car park, take out a large bag of black refuse and dump it in our skip in our car park.

‘Then she went off and she drove out.’

Mr Stenson then asks Mr Atkinson whether the woman was caught on CCTV. When he said she was, they begin to hatch their plan.

Mr Stenson can be heard saying: 'Throw it into our bins - our bins of course, not her own because she doesn't pay for her bins. She uses the bins of others'

The pair decided to give the woman one hour to collect her rubbish from their bin – otherwise they would post the footage online, which they duly did.

The video then cuts to Mr Stenson saying: ‘Folks it’s 23:30 and, as promised, we are going to show you CCTV of the lady who illegally dumped her rubbish bag in our bin, quite brazenly may I add.

‘Any minute now you will see the car come in to the car park, just park up here and into this bin she dumps a black bag of rubbish.’

CCTV footage shows the car pull into the car park.

Mr Stenson, who barred vegans from the cafe in 2015, describes the vehicle as ‘small’ and similar to a Toyota Yaris.

Narrating the footage to the tune of the Pink Panther theme, Mr Stenson says: ‘The girl has now exited her vehicle and is proceeding to remove a big black bag of rubbish from her car, throw it into our bins.

Mr Atkinson cuts open the bag with a pair of scissors while wearing blue protective gloves

They open up the black bin bag to 'dissect it with a fine tooth comb'

At midnight, the pair cut open the bag to learn more about the culprit. They find a medical letter with the woman’s address on it

Mr Stenson gets into a car and drives to the woman's home. When they find the car they believe is the one in the CCTV footage, they deposit the bag on top

‘Our bins of course, not her own because she doesn’t pay for her bins. She uses the bins of others.’

The woman can then be seen getting back into the car and driving away.

Mr Atkinson adds: ‘The audacity of these people, the audacity.’

Mr Stenson said anyone who comes forward with information about the woman will be rewarded with a voucher for the hotel’s sister café.

At midnight, the pair head back outside to open up the bag and examine the woman’s rubbish.

He opens the skip to find three bags but explains he knows which bag is hers because of the type of plastic and they prepare to ‘dissect it with a fine tooth comb’.

Using gloves and scissors, they open the bag to find a medical letter with the woman’s address on it.

Mr Stenson then gets into his car to go to the address and find the house.

The video ends with the general manager dumping the bag on top of her car.

Elle Darby, 22, was sent an invoice for nearly €5.3m for ‘publicity’ after she wrote to Mr Stenson asking if he would like to ‘collaborate’.

Mr Stenson sent her an invoice stating that she is being charged for ‘the provision of features in 114 articles across 20 countries with a potential reach of 450 million people’, and that the publicity Mr Stenson has obtained for her would be valued at €4.3m plus VAT.
