Is Helen Mirren, 73, really ‘too old’ for a backpack? Actress criticised after posing for picture wearing a £395 rucksack

She is often hailed for appearing younger than her 73 years.

After Dame Helen Mirren posted a picture of her wearing a £395 backpack, however, she faced some unlikely criticism – from those who claimed the actress was too old for a rucksack.

Responding to the Instagram image, one wrote: ‘No, no, no, Helen! You are so beautiful gorgeous perfection … Why messing with that [sic]. It’s a no-no after 19.’

Another commented: ‘Back to school I see.’

Others criticised the cost of the bag, which is made by American luxury brand Tumi and can be monogrammed with the owner’s initials. ‘£300 backpack? Really?! I’ll stick to my £10 Asda one ta,’ wrote one.

Dame Helen posted the picture in Vilnius, Lithuania, where she is working, with the caption: ‘Off to the market with my new favourite bag, my backpack by Tumi.’

And her choice was defended by others. One wrote: ‘Who says it’s a no-no! Why not defy these silly rules and make it a yes-yes!’
