Afghan immigrant and Islamic State sympathiser who mowed down 16 pedestrians in the heart of Melbourne – killing an elderly grandfather – is sentenced to life behind bars

  • The Afghanistan immigrant has been jailed for life – with a minimum of 30 years

ISIS sympathiser Saeed Noori – who mowed down pedestrians in Melbourne in 2017 – has been sentenced to life behind bars.

Saeed Noori, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of murder, 11 counts of recklessly causing injury and five counts of reckless conduct endangering life.

In the Supreme Court of Victoria on Thursday Noori was jailed and must spend at least 30 years behind bears before being eligible for release on parole.

The Afghanistan immigrant will be 60 by the time he’s eligible for parole, after killing a grandfather and mowing down 16 other pedestrians at a busy Melbourne intersection in December 2017.

Grandfather of three Antonio Crocaris, 83, suffered fatal injuries when he was hit and died eight days later.

Noori came to Australia from Afghanistan as a refugee in 2004 and is now an Australian citizen.

His lawyers previously claimed he suffered from schizophrenia and had fasted for seven days before the attack.

Police said Noori’s computer and a USB stick contained a number of images from international terrorist attacks, videos about ISIS and other material that an expert said showed he had a ‘degree of radicalisation’.

Saeed Noori was sentenced on Thursday morning to life behind bars

More to come.
