The real reason why Melbourne Storm playmaker Brodie Croft was a surprise omission from their round 25 NRL clash on Friday night has been explained.

The halfback was ruled out with a knee injury on the afternoon of the match with rookie Scott Drinkwater earning a last minute call-up.

Croft was joined on the sidelines by fellow injured star Cameron Munster, who  unveiled the bizarre reason why his halves partner was missing from Melbourne’s shock 22-16 loss against Penrith Panthers.

‘He decided to play lawn bowls the other day and kept banging his knee up on the ground and it blew up,’ Munster told Channel 9 commentator Darren Lockyer afterwards.

‘His knee blew up like a balloon and he couldn’t walk.’

Storm football manager Frank Ponissi told NRL.com: ‘It wasn’t done through the lawn bowls, but the continual bending of (Croft’s) knee in lawn bowls has inflamed it and I’ve never seen a knee so swollen on Thursday.’

As Storm go into week one of the NRL finals eyeing back to back NRL premierships, coach Craig Bellamy is expected to ban off-field antics.

Another unnamed Storm player is nursing a strained back he injured while playing golf.

‘There’s a couple of injuries going around about either golf or lawn bowls so I’m thinking he’ll be scratching that for this week and making sure the boys are getting themselves right for (the finals,’ Munster said.

Storm will host a home semi-final against either South Sydney Rabbitohs or Cronulla Sharks next weekend, pending other results.
