‘It is time to rise up!’: Wild-eyed Johnny Depp is given rapturous welcome by Comic-Con crowd

Johnny Depp, dressed in character from the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, made a surprise appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday giving fans a wild speech about magic and ‘higher purposes’ before disappearing into the dark.

Depp’s participation in the Comic-Con panel marked his first major event since the release of his Rolling Stone interview last month which painted the 55-year-old actor as extremely troubled.

Although many people are outraged Depp, who was accused of domestic violence, was not dropped from the JK Rowling film, the actor received a mostly warm welcome from fans who crowded into H Hall on Saturday to see the cast of the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

‘The great gift of your applause is not for me but for yourselves,’ Depp said in his character’s English accent as he waved a wand over the audience.

‘Magic blooms only in rare souls. It is granted to those who live for higher purposes. What a world we would make for all of humanity. We, who live for freedom, for truth — the moment has come to rise up and take our rightful place in the world,’ he added.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, after Depp gave his odd speech the lights in the room flickered and went out. Depp was gone when they came back on.

During the panel a new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was played for the crowd. According to tweets, some people booed when Depp’s character Gellert Grindewald appeared on the screen.

Earlier during a Q-and-A portion of the panel – which Depp skipped – the cast was asked what they would do if they could use a magic spell.

Also during the Comic Con Zoe Kravitz (right) said that if she was given magical powers she would ‘impeach Trump’. Ezra Miller (left) added that he would ‘smash’ the patriarchy

Zoe Kravitz, who plays Leta Lestrange, quickly responded: ‘Impeach Trump.’

Her co-star Dan Fogler added that the impeachment spell would be called ‘Impeachimus maximus’.

The crowd responded with loud cheers, the Huffington Post reports.

Ezra Miller, who opted out of dressing as his character instead cosplaying as Toadette from Super Mario Bros, chimed in adding that if he was given magical powers he would ‘smash’ the patriarchy. Again, the crowd erupted in cheers and applause.
