Tottenham forward Son-Henug min has spoken of a ‘really, really tough few days’ but praised his team-mates in the wake of Andre Gomes’ injury on Sunday.

Son’s challenge, along with Serge Aurier’s lunge, contributed to a horror injury for the Everton midfielder, though Gomes has had successful surgery on the right ankle dislocation.

For Son, after scoring his first goal of two in Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday, the South Korean did not celebrate and spoke afterwards of his dejection regarding the incident at Goodison Park.

‘It was a really really tough few days,’ Son told BT Sport

‘But everyone gave me such strong messages, I’m really sorry about this accident and this situation.

‘But of course I had to focus for the team as well, I wanted to respect [that] this is football. I had to keep going and keep working hard and this is my right answer to all the people who support me.’

Gomes himself was released from hospital on Tuesday and thanked those who have offered their best wishes in the aftermath.

Gomes said: ‘Hi everyone. As you already know everything went well. I’m already at home with my family and I’d like to thank you all for the support, the messages and the positive energy. Thank you.’

It is unlikely that the 26-year-old will play again this season although Everton are yet to set a date for his return.
