Italian newspapers call for Maurizio Sarri to be sacked after Juventus’ Champions League exit

‘Sarri Out’: Italian papers call for under-fire Juventus manager to go as Serie A champions crash out of Champions League to Lyon with ‘Simone Inzaghi and Zinedine Zidane waiting in the wings’

  • Juventus fell to a surprise Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon
  • Memphis Depay scored the crucial away goal to send them to the quarter-finals
  • Italian press have responded and called for Maurizio Sarri to be given the boot

Italian newspapers have called for Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri to be given the boot following their surprise Champions League exit to Lyon.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as the Bianconeri took a 2-1 victory on the night, but Memphis Depay’s penalty proved crucial as Lyon advanced to the quarter finals on away goals.

And as Juventus’ season comes to a disappointing end, Italian newspapers have called for Sarri to be replaced at the helm of the club.

Tuttosport ran with the headline ‘Sarri out,’ and saying on the front page: ‘Despite an extraordinary Ronaldo, Juve are out of the Champions League in the round of 16 against Lyon.

‘It’s a failure for Sarri, who was unable to give the team a convincing style of play.’

Meanwhile La Gazetta dello Sport reported that Sarri is ‘at risk’ of losing his job, and the shadows of potential replacements Simeone Inzaghi and Zinedine Zidane are hanging over him.

The Bianconeri went into the second-leg 1-0 down, after Lucas Tousart gave Lyon a victory at the Groupama Stadium in February.

Juventus started the night off horribly in the second leg as Rodrigo Bentacur gave away a penalty after a foul on Houssem Aouar.

Depay stepped up and hit a sublime panenka to score a crucial away goal and double Lyon’s lead in the tie after just 12 minutes.

Ronaldo scored a brace to put Juventus back into contention but they needed a third goal to secure qualification.

The Portuguese superstar wasn’t able to score his hat-trick goal and the Bianconeri shockingly were kicked out of the competition with Lyon advancing to face Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

Defeat for Sarri doesn’t do his future at the club any favours after he was already a man under pressure despite delivering a Scudetto title to the club in his first season at the club.

For the first time, the club won the Scudetto while conceding more than 30 goals, an unconvincing record that did not please officials at the club.

Despite the clubbing winning the title for the ninth year in succession, the Bianconeri have struggled to adapt to his quick-passing schemes and lost four of 12 league matches after the restart.

Inzaghi is a contender to take over the job following a highly successful season at Lazio where he guided the team to challenge for the title.

Former Juventus star Zidane has also been linked with the job after winning the LaLiga title with Real Madrid, but he too was knocked out of the Champions League with defeat to Manchester City.
