Australia’s east coast will be lashed by heavy rain and winds this weekend as a much-needed trough moves across the country.
Sydneysiders should keep their umbrellas within arm’s reach beginning on Friday as scattered showers make their way across the city.
The wet weather is expected to linger until Sunday, with New South Wales’ Central Coast set to receive as much as 80mm.
The thunderstorms will bring parts of NSW and Queensland the most significant rainfall seen in more than six months, Weather Zone meteorologist Craig McIntosh told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr McIntosh said the wet weekend will be a relief for some people across the state.
‘It’s a pretty good rain event for some parts that are drastically needing rain.

‘This is nowhere near drought breaking, it’s far short of the rainfall needed, they need hundreds of millimeters of rain,’ he said.
Meteorologist Brett Dutschke said Brisbane and St George in QLD and Armidale and Dubbo in NSW would be inundated with significant rainfall on Friday and Saturday.
However, he said drought-stricken Wanaaring and Pooncarie in regional NSW and Birdsville and Quilpie in regional QLD would likely miss out.

The rain comes after a cold start to the week for the east coast, with parts of New South Wales dropping to as low as -2.2C in the north.
Temperatures will reach 19 in Sydney on Saturday and Sunday before dropping to 10 on Monday.
Brisbane will soar to 22C on Saturday before hitting 23C on Sunday.
There is chance of a thunderstorm in the west of Brisbane during Friday afternoon and evening
Victoria is largely missing out on the low. But temperatures in Melbourne will dip to 16C by Sunday.
South Australia will see some light rain but Adelaide will also see plenty of sunshine.
Tasmania should get heavy falls over the weekend too. There is also a cold front expected to hit western parts of Tasmania on Sunday.
Canberra can expect light showers throughout the weekend.

Darwin is looking at sunshine over the weekend. It will be foggy in the mornings but that is expected to clear through out the day.
Hobart is also mostly sunny but will see some showers on Sunday.
Perth can expect a sunny weekend with some light winds.
