It’s time to pull the wet weather gear in parts of NSW and Queensland as rain sets in this weekend

Australia’s east coast will be lashed by heavy rain and winds this weekend as a much-needed trough moves across the country.

Sydneysiders should keep their umbrellas within arm’s reach beginning on Friday as scattered showers make their way across the city.

The wet weather is expected to linger until Sunday, with New South Wales’ Central Coast set to receive as much as 80mm.

The thunderstorms will bring parts of NSW and Queensland the most significant rainfall seen in more than six months, Weather Zone meteorologist Craig McIntosh told Daily Mail Australia.

However, he said drought-stricken Wanaaring and Pooncarie in regional NSW and Birdsville and Quilpie in regional QLD would likely miss out.
