Mitchell Helton, 55, was arrested by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office for pointing a gun at two delivery men who arrived late with his order
A Florida man was arrested for pointing his gun at two furniture delivery men after they arrived late with his order.
The men called Mitchell Helton of Manatee County, Florida, to inform him that they were en route to his home with his orders from Furniture Warehouse on August 3.
Jason Adamson and Jose Marrero arrived to Helton’s residence to find the front door ajar, according to the police report.
When they called out to Helton, the 55-year-old was reportedly angry that it had taken so long for him to get his delivery.
When asked if he still wanted the furniture, deputies says Helton responded, ‘Do whatever you want’, and retired to his bedroom.
Helton allegedly reappeared while the men were unloading his furniture, gun drawn and pointed at the two men.
Helton allegedly said, ‘You know, I’ve shot people for less.’
Adamson and Marrero deescalated the situation, explaining how to file a complaint and then continued to unpack the furniture.
Although Adamson and Marrero reportedly, ‘dismissed his action as a show of anger toward the late delivery’, they still contacted the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The two delivery men from Furniture Warehouse contacted authorities and Helton was subsequently charged with two counts of aggravated assault
When confronted by deputies, Helton claimed he was startled by someone trying to enter his home and wanted to defend himself.
Helton admitted to confronting the men with a gun, but couldn’t explain why he did so, according to the report.
Helton also couldn’t explain why, if startled and fearing for his safety, he called Furniture Warehouse instead of 911.
Helton allegedly told the delivery men, ‘You know, I’ve shot people for less’
Deputies reported inconsistencies in Helton’s story.
Helton was arrested on August 3, charged with two counts of aggravated assault and had a bond of $5,000.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office released Helton three days later on August 6.
Helton was previously arrested by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence in 2014.
