Ivory Coast have sacked their manager Jean-Louis Gasset despite not yet being out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The West African country – who are hosting AFCON – have dismissed the Frenchman two days after their shock 4-0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea, which left them with three points from three games in their group.

They could still progress through to the last-16 of the competition as one of the best third-placed teams, but are relying on other results.

Ivory Coast opened the tournament with a comfortable 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau, before they narrowly lost 1-0 to Nigeria.

However, the thrashing by Equatorial Guinea – who are ranked 88th in the world – proved to be too much for Gasset.

His assistant Ghislain Printant was also dismissed and Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches and a former Reading and Ivory Coast midfielder, has been appointed on an interim basis.

The Ivorian Football Federation said it had ‘terminated the contracts’ of Gasset and Printant ‘due to insufficient results’.

The 70-year-old Frenchman – who has managed the likes of Montpellier, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux during his 39-year coaching career – was appointed in May 2022, replacing his compatriot Patrice Beaumelle.

Beaumelle’s contract wasn’t extended after Ivory Coast missed out on qualifying of the 2022 World Cup and only reached the last-16 of the 2021 AFCON.

Gasset won 10 of his 17 games in charge of the country, with two of his four defeats coming at this tournament.

This included the 4-0 loss by Equatorial Guinea which was the heaviest home defeat in their history, while Ivory Coast are also the first AFCON host to lose two group games since they also did in 1984.

Ivory Coast could still progress to the last-16 as one of the best third-placed teams, but are relying on other results with the final AFCON group games taking place on Wednesday night

The four best third-placed teams from the six groups progress to the knockout stages and South Africa, Namibia, Tunisia, DR Congo, Zambia and Tanzania could all surpass Ivory Coast’s three points, with those nations in action in their final group games this evening.

Ivory Coast’s hopes of qualification were boosted after Ghana lost 2-1 to Cape Verde meaning they will finish third in their group on two points.

Gasset, 70, had also courted controversy after leaving former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha out of his squad for the tournament and he becomes the seventh Ivory Coast boss to depart in the last 10 years.
