New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has fired back at Alan Jones with a brilliant rebuke after he his controversial sock comment.

Advertisers have been pulling funding from Jones’ 2GB show since the outspoken commentator suggested Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison ‘shove a sock down’ the Kiwi leader’s throat.

Ms Ardern hit back at the host with artful jab at the Wallabies – a team that Jones coached between 1984 and 1988.

‘I understand he used to be closely linked to the Wallabies, so let’s just say that revenge is best served through a Bledisloe Cup,’ she told The Am Show on Tuesday.

The comment comes just days after an embarrassing 36-0 loss by the Wallabies to the All Blacks on Saturday night.

Australia had been aiming to win the Bledisloe Cup for the first time in 17 years after their record-breaking 47-26 win against the world champions in Perth a week earlier.

But the All Blacks hit back in stunning fashion with a five try to nil thumping at Eden Park to ensure the Trans-Tasman trophy remained theirs.

Ms Ardern even presented the cup to the All Blacks and visited the jubilant dressing afterwards, where celebrations continued.

During her interview on the breakfast show she refused to comment further on Mr Jones’ remarks.

‘I don’t have an opinion on every single person that says something about me, particularly given this is an Australian commentator. We have enough of our own to occupy my time.’

The comments in question were made on Thursday afternoon after Ms Ardern urged Australia to take stronger action on climate at a forum on the matter in Tuvalu.

‘Here she is preaching on global warming and saying that we’ve got to do something about climate change,’ Mr Jones said on his program.

‘I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat.’

Mr Jones – who previously suggested former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard should be put in a ‘chaff bag’ and thrown out to sea and that her father had ‘died of shame’ – initially insisted his comments on Ms Ardern had been ‘willfully misrepresented’.

He later acknowledged he was in the wrong and saying he had apologised to her in writing.

Nine Entertainment last week said it wouldn’t try to rein in Mr Jones and his fellow talkback hosts when it takes full ownership of Macquarie Radio.

But Macquarie Radio said on Sunday it was prepared tear up the star’s multi-million contract if he repeated ‘commentary of this nature’.

The company only re-signed Mr Jones on a lucrative two-year contract in May following months of tense negotiations.
