Jadon Sancho’s timekeeping ‘was an issue for England staff’ before he missed out on World Cup place

Jadon Sancho first fell out of favour with England boss Gareth Southgate after ‘turning up late for a team meeting last year’ – but the Man United winger’s omission from his World Cup squad was ‘based purely on performances’

  • Jadon Sancho initially lost his place in England setup due to poor timekeeping
  • Sancho was late for a team meeting before a clash with Andorra in October 2021
  • Gareth Southgate and his England team-mates were left waiting for him to arrive
  • However, it is believed he missed out on a World Cup place solely due to form

Jadon Sancho’s timekeeping was reportedly an issue for England’s coaching staff before he failed to earn a place in their World Cup squad.

The Manchester United winger failed to make the cut in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament in Qatar, which they get underway against Iran on November 21.

As reported by The Telegraph, the decision to leave Sancho out was based purely on performances.

However, it has emerged that Sancho was late for a team meeting ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier away to Andorra in October 2021.

Southgate only starts meetings when all players are in attendance, so he and his squad were left to wait. Sancho was then left out of the next England squad.

The 22-year-old has been capped by England on 23 occasions since making his debut in 2018.

But he hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since the aforementioned game against Andorra.

In 2018 both Sancho and Phil Foden were dropped from the England Under-19 side against Latvia after turning up late to a training session ahead of the game.

Sancho started the season impressively for United with goals against Liverpool and Leicester, but he hasn’t scored in the league since the start of September.

Although he could potentially be used as an attacking midfielder, Southgate’s preference for a three-man defence and wing-backs instead of wingers also doesn’t help the United player’s cause in terms of fitting into the team.

Other players who weren’t able to get into the World Cup squad include Tammy Abraham, Ivan Toney, James Ward-Prowse, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

England will take on Iran, USA and Wales in the group stages of the tournament.
