A man who viciously murdered his wife by stabbing her in the eye and heart before slitting her throat after wrongly accusing her of having an affair has been jailed for life.
Brazilian national Jaici Rocha, 37, became jealous and paranoid that Karina Batista, 40, was cheating on him with his brother-in-law.
The couple had moved to the UK from Brazil in 2016, but Rocha, who had been suffering mental health problems, used a ‘chef-type’ knife in a ‘frenzied’ attack on Miss Batista in the flat they shared in Kensington Park in Bristol.
She suffered 27 different stab wounds and nearly had her back severed during the horrific attack. He had brought the kitchen knife and had taken it to the flat to scare her into confessing the affair.
After returning home from church together, Rocha, who had been suffering from mental health problems, killed his wife.
He was jailed for life with a minimum of 20 years at Bristol Crown Court for his attack on February 13, 2017.
Judge Dingemans said: ‘It is not clear if he was delusional or simply wrong.
‘But I am sure Mr Rocha purchased a chef-type knife and had held it to Batista’s throat, demanding a confession of an affair not taking place.
‘Mr Rocha has resolutely refused to acknowledge what he has done.’
He added: ‘The frenzied nature of the attack and the targeting of the face, neck and heart, and 27 wounds were inflicted, are matters that must be reflected in the sentence,’ he said.
‘There is some evidence of mental disorder and having some minor role in the commission of the offence.’
The couple had come from Brazil to the UK in 2016, where Miss Batista had a sister
Speaking after the case, Detective Chief Inspector Gary Haskins, who led the inquiry, said: ‘Karina had only been in Bristol for a year having moved with Rocha to make a better life for herself and to be closer to her family.
‘Tragically, her partner’s unfounded jealousy meant her chance to enjoy this new chapter of her life was ended in the most horrific way possible.
‘Hopefully her family can finally get a sense of closure now that justice has been served.’
