Mrs Kavaliauskas’ body was discovered in a bedroom of her white-painted house by her brother and a cousin who arrived after fearing that something had happened to her.

No official details have yet been released about how they both died.

The woman’s husband and two children were on an Easter break to their native Lithuania four days previously.

Neighbours said Mr Kavaliauskas knew that his wife had been cheating on him, even when he was in prison serving an eight year sentence for drug smuggling. He was caught after a boat loaded with drugs was spotted being driven onto the beach at Hythe.

They also told of hearing shouts and a commotion at the murder scene before paramedics and police arrived and immediately threw up a cordon around the property.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘We have launched Operation Assert, a murder investigation, after two bodies were discovered at a house in Worthing.

‘Officers were called to the address in South Farm Road at 1.51am on Friday where a man and a woman were sadly found dead. Next of kin have been informed.’

Heather Denyer was on her way home from work at about 1.40am when she saw up to nine police cars pull up to the front garden of the wooden-fenced house.

‘I think they were a nice couple. The husband would come in and he was a polite guy,’ he said.

‘I sleep upstairs above the shop and I didn’t hear anything.. I sleep like a log. But we never had any problems from them. But this clearly is a big issue. It’s a nice area and there has never been anything like this before and I’ve been here 10 years.’

Janet Berry would often see the woman and her husband walking their two pug dogs and said they seemed like a nice looking couple.

‘I was quite shocked when I heard the news,’ she said.

‘To know something has happened to them, well it’s sheer horror. It doesn’t happen around here.’

Neighbour Chris Denyer, 52, said: ‘At 2am last night I realised there was lots of police cars outside and ambulances.

‘There was a couple living there and the husband is currently abroad in Lithuania with their two kids.

‘The wife and someone else is dead inside the property, but how they died I have no idea.

‘They’ve lived there for a good few years, it is a rented property.

Another neighbour who refused to be named said: ‘The couple lived there for a few years and they were a lovely addition to the neighbourhood, it was very nice to talk to them when I passed them in the street.

‘I mostly talked to the mum and she was really nice.

‘The kids go to the school I used to go to as well, they are fairly young.’

Another, who also refused to be named, said they heard ‘wailing’ after the bodies were discovered.
