James Comey fires back at Trump’s claim of ‘criminal deep state’

Former FBI Director James Comey shot back at President Donald Trump’s claim the bureau engaged in ‘spying’ on his campaign – and Trump resumed his feud after a brief lull.

Comey tweeted Wednesday, as Trump labeled the FBI’s use of a confidential informant ‘spygate,’ writing that Trump’s claims ‘will do lasting damage to our country.’

‘Facts matter. The FBI’s use of Confidential Human Sources (the actual term) is tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country,’ Comey responded on Twitter.

‘Attacks on the FBI and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country. How will Republicans explain this to their grandchildren?’ the career law enforcement official asked.

Comey also suggested Trump was a liar, without mentioning his name.

‘Dangerous time when our country is led by those who will lie about anything, backed by those who will believe anything, based on information from media sources that will say anything. Americans must break out of that bubble and seek truth,’ he wrote.

Trump, asked about Comey by reporters at the White House, resumed scathing attacks that he mounted at the start of Comey’s book tour.

‘What we’re doing is we’re cleaning everything up. It’s so important. What I’m doing is a service to this country. And I did a great service to this country by firing James Comey,’ Trump said.

‘A lot of people have said it,’ Trump continued.

‘I think James Comey’s got a lot of problems. If you look at what he did. If you look at all of the lies the tremendous lies, if you look at all that’s going on I think James Comey’s got a lot of problems,’ Trump said.

Trump also suggested Comey could come in for problems when the Justice Department’s Inspector General issues a report on the FBI’s conduct in the Hillary Clinton and Russia probes during the campaign.

‘At some point they have an IG report, and then let’s see what James Comey has to say. And I assumed he’s covered by the IG report,’ Trump said.

He has previously called Comey a ‘liar’ and a ‘leaker,’ and pointed to Comey’s decision to pass memos he kept of his interactions with Trump to a friend who then read them to the New York Times.

The president also called Comey an ‘untruthful slime ball’ a week before Comey’s book tour began and blasted his handling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal during the campaign.
