James Corden calls Kanye West a ‘complex fellow’ while recounting Airplane Karaoke experience

Kanye West and James Corden filmed a spectacular version of carpool karaoke in an airplane back in October but getting there wasn’t so easy.

Corden recalled the arduous process of pulling the segment together during an appearance on another late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, on Monday night.

The 41-year-old Brit is making the media rounds this week to promote his new movie musical, Cats.

It seemed like a loaded question when Jimmy Kimmel inquired about what it was like to work with Kanye during the segment.

With a laugh Corden responded: ‘Why are you curious, Jimmy?’

Kimmel admitted that he’s worked with the rap mogul in the past and knows first hand that it can be a process.

‘Because I’ve been in the mix with Kanye,’ Jimmy said. ‘I know that things go according to Kanye’s plan. Not God’s plan … Kanye’s plan’

'Complex fellow,' Corden responded with a chuckle.

‘This was actually the third time that we had tried to do a sort of Carpool Karaoke with Kanye. The first time he agreed and then he canceled a few days later, and you’re like, ‘Well, that’s a shame, but it’s fine.'”

‘The second time that Kanye canceled Carpool Karaoke was so late in the day that I was driving up his road in the car, with all the cameras, and got this phone call saying it’s been canceled,’ he recounted.

Adding: ‘I think I basically turned around outside his house and drove back to the studio.’

Kanye then sent Corden a text about wanting to do something with the choir ‘a bus or truck in LA’ and had apparently done the same to Kimmel.

Third time's a charm: Kanye had canceled on the segment twice before and repeatedly switched the details on the final version which was ultimately filmed

They joked that the Jesus Walks rapper was going through the ‘J’s’ on his phone.  West told Corden on Saturday that he wanted to film on that Monday.

‘Well that’s difficult,’ Corden laughed, ‘because we need to get a truck and like … permits.’

Kimmel chimed in: ‘Logistics are not his thing to worry about.’

Corden and his team were ready to make Monday happen on a truck but West pushed it to Wednesday. However, when Wednesday rolled around there were crickets from the rapper.

At some point, the late night host got a text: ‘Not going to happen today.’

He laughed: ‘Yeah, no s**t!’

At that point, Ye suggested that they switch the venue to an airplane – which had never been done on the The Late Late Show before.

‘Okay, great, why not? Let’s do it on a space ship,’ Corden joked.  ‘To his credit, he and his team gets the plane.’

‘Even as I walked onto the plane, I thought at some point somebody would go ‘No it’s not gonna happen today,'” James said.

'Once in a lifetime thing that I'll never ever forget,' Corden said. 'It was an incredible moment. 'Being on that plane surrounded by that choir, sitting with him, he was in a great place in the best mood, I will never forget what that choir sounded like on that airplane.'
